A question though (being a complete technical noob :)). But if it doesn't have a 4K Bluray player, how can it play games in 4K other than through software upscaling? Or is there another way around that?

Disk has nothing to do with gpu,cpu and ram which is what renders the game in resolution dev has set it for a console.  Physical or digital copy of games it depends on gpu, cpu and ram  :)

I didn't really sweep anything to the side. I presented the advantage of the Ps4s over the XB1S and then presented the advantage of the XB1S over the Ps4s.

I think it's important to note that pretty much all, if not all, 4K TVs upscale to 4K.  So, if you have a 4K TV, anyway, the XB1S really has no advantages.  Of course, not all upscalers are created equal, but being $299, I highly doubt the XB1S is going to be better at it than a $1000+ TV.  It'll probably do it as well as a $500+ one, though.

Well Samsung and Sony for sure; but no-name brands, big-name-turned-no-name brands (let's face it, Panasonic is garbage without their precious Plasma), and LG? No, their upscaling is all garbage.

This worries me. This mid generation thing. Is this how gaming is going to continue to be? I mean, if there's a traditional PS5, where does it fit? Theoretically, this is Sony's answer to Microsoft's One S, but the One S isn't as capable as the Neo, and the Scorpio will be much more capable than the Pro, is Sony going to shoot back with something else that's more capable than Scorpio? I'm just genuinely concerned with the pacing of how consoles are releasing.

I'm sure the Scorpio is confirmed to be 6TF, 1.8 more than Pro. I'm sure that TFs of the Scorpio won't simply rely on GPU with bottlenecks and whatnot as TFs is the calulation and culmination of many processes into one unit of measurement, so the CPU will most likely outpace Pros as well. These are good specs, great pricing for what you're getting, but again, one upping Pro again within 3 years to combat Scorpio is something that I don't want sony to do.

PS5 was guesstimated at around 15TFLOPS (if they go with 10nm node), most likely for 2019/20 - that's about the same jump in power as in 7th to 8th gen, and that would be proper new gen - unfortunatelly, while those 15TFLOPS are more then capable of 4K UHD native, it's a waste of resources to render in that res, given that for true 7th to 8th jump AND taking into account 1080p to 4K UHD (which is a lot more then 720p to 1080p) it would need much more...around 25TFLOPS actually...and that will not happen, at least not in that time frame, on that node and for $399.

But given how things are going, more like PCs, maybe PS5 will be weaker, but earlier new gen, so another ~2.5x jump for ~10TFLOPS, and then PS5 Pro in 2022 with ~25TFLOPS.

Power consumption: Up to 310W

Not having 4k Blu ray seems to be the end of the world.

Not end of the world, but when you think about a Pro/Premium product or service you get some expectations, but as greenmedic88 said on another post, maybe the 4K blu ray market isn't big enough, we don't have those numbers but Sony surely does.

But anyway, I think that part of the problem is when you compare to the Xbox One S, specially because it's not a Pro/Premium product and it does have 4k blu ray people get somewhat confused.

Sony learned with the PS3 that while it is a nice sales driver at 1st have this type of tech becomes a cost drag later on when the special feature becomes available for cheap.

The PS4 Pro has the advantage that the  PS4 already exist. It does not need a non-gaming gimmick to help grow the userbase.

Fact is in a year or 2 4K blu-ray players are going to be dirt cheap and Sony will have sacrificed alot of sales (with a higher price) to have a feature that won't be needed.

PS4 is games 1st, ya it does MLB tv and Netflix, but it already does not do 3D. Sony is sticking by their guns and not adding features that will make it more expensive for people to actually game (cost of admission in this case).

The name "PS4 Pro" is a little silly, how is it for professionals? Is it the version of PS4 that is legal for professional gamers to use while the home edition is illegal?

any sillier than the "Exteme Box"?

Its gaming consoles they have silly names. SUPER NINTENDO, SEGA GENESIS, gamecube(so fricken literally).

I think they are mimicking Apple here. Apple brands their premium stuff as "Pro" so consumers have been conditioned that Pro means better at extra cost.

$399 is a great price, especially considering it has a 1TB HDD, not a 500GB like we're seeing in all other consoles this gen. When they confirmed that the PS4Pro had a 1TB HDD I really was expecting a $449 price point.

this price is killer. There are only a handful of GPUs on the market that can do 4K, and they cost 300 dollars + by themselves. Yes it is native 4k, but PC does not have the optimization to pull of what Pro is doing with the upscaling.

It will be a tough decision wether I go BF1 on my PS4Pro or PC this holiday. I am leaning PS4Pro version because I like to play on a gamepad and would rather not compete against keyboard/mousers(it is superior, but less fun to me). What makes it tough is I am running BF1 beta at max settings at 90 FPS with my 144hz Monitor w/ freesync....

decisions...

Let's not forget that consoles typically do post-processing in their scalers to improve the final image.

TV's also tend to introduce input-lag when they are doing upscaling.

And often TV's have a wide-ranging degree of upscaling quality starting from absolutely terrible to semi-decent, quality wise.

The Xbox One S certainly has several real advantages if you are gaming at 4k.

If you look at PC Blu-ray drives, 4k capable drives aren't anymore expensive really. (Many non-4k PC drives just need a firmware update for instance for 4k Blu Ray support.)

Sony had the chance to win the Multimedia game and they dropped the ball, plain and simple...
The Xbox One S is the best console for Multimedia and it's cheaper than the PS4 Pro.

So a summary is that:
Xbox One S:
* Can Play Audio CD's.
* Can Play 4k Blu-Ray.
* Full NTFS support on external media.
* HDMI Passthrough and snapping of video.
