Forums - Gaming - Sony Needs to Lower the Price of the PS4.

Understood.  But until I know the price and release date of the slim, I'll remain pessimistic.

Why pessimistic? What have Sony got to be pessimistic about? They're selling the amount of consoles they targeted, making the money they expect to and are about to release the Slim, Neo and PSVR. Watch the E3 conference when Shawn Layden mentioned there are 40m PS4s out there capable of using PSVR. When he got a cheer from the audience for the 'number' he faltered slightly and said rather embarrassingly 'well ... thanks for that.'

People need to stop thinking Sony are PS Fanboys, they're a business.

The context of this thread as pointed out in my original post is the potential outselling of the PS4 by the Xbox One. I (not Sony) am pessimistic that the PS4 will outsell the Xbox One until I see more concrete information. This is my personal observation.

But on what are you fomulating this opinion? The XB1 is leading on Amazon only because it's a new slim, is cheaper than the original and people are waiting for the PS4 slim and the Neo. When Sony was dominating the Amazon charts it was in the top 20 but the XB1 is not dominating at all, just leading over a console in short supply, as evidenced by Media Create. I will absolutely guarentee that once the slim and the Neo release, it'll be back to business as usual. This was all accomplished without having to offer 2/3/4 games, a $50 gift card and cutting the price by $50 - $100. MS are desparately trying to make their mark before Sony make their move. Sony are sitting pretty and I really find it odd that you've decided to suggest 'Sony needs a price drop' when everyone and their mother knows Sony are about to drop the price. It just seems weird timing.

Being pessimistic is your prerogative, but i can't feel the same way. MS had to drop their price for two reasons:

1) to keep up with Sony or risk falling way further behind;

2) releasing their slim premium model and shifting old stock.

If MS had to go to those lengths to beat Sony by 10K, without Sony doing anything at all, then Sony doing the inevitable and dropping the price with the slim will do the same.

They've done this every gen since the PS1 and there is no reason why they won't do it, considering the slim has already been leaked.

It feels like you are being pessimistic because the inevitable won't happen. Had you been pessimistic last gen when Sony was struggling I might understand your pessimism, but this gen it's harder to do so.

I've already given my reasons in previous posts. And I'm not trying to convince anyone otherwise. I'm just expressing my point of view. And if anyone feels differently that's fine. Let's just agree to disagree and just move on.

But that's the thing, there's nothing to agree to disagree on. The PS4 will be getting a price drop when the Slim launches, but it's not out of any 'need' (they've sold 20m more consoles than MS) it's a matter of how it always has been and always will be. It just seems odd that you're saying Sony needs a price drop when we all know the PS4 is going to get a price drop. It's the use of 'need' that sets your argument apart, a word I've yet to see a convincing argument for being the correct word to describe the situation. If you were describing MS then I could agree it's correct because MS 'need' to try and stop themselves falling even further behind.

To sum up: The PS4 will be getting a price drop soon but it won't be out of any 'need' and it won't be a reaction to what MS have done with the Slim.

Sony did a price cut for the PS2 by 100$ too, when that was winning as well.

PS4 is the new PS2.

Sep 7. everyone goes crazy when they do a 100$ cut, in my opinion.

Its not out of need, but because they have someone at HQ projecting growth and useing math showing its how they make the most money long term.

Yeah, it's just how Sony do things. There's no need for them to 'react' just continue with their long term plans as usual.

Actually, I see what you're saying. I'm just waiting for Sony to make an official announcement with prices and release dates for the PlayStation 4 Slim before I become more optimistic.

Nah. They're fine. Its the fastest selling PlayStation in history. They don't need to do any price drops. They will have other things that will help move consoles. PSVR will be huge for them. Not to mention they will also have their decade development game The Last Guardian this holiday season.

MS needs to sell at this price point because they need to move units. Sony doesn't need to mess with their profit margins. All this would do is eat into the profits they are getting from the PS+ price increase. Launch PSVR, watch sales skyrocket again and watch Neo sales start gen 8.5 with a advantage over scorpio.

I know people don't like to say this, but now a large portion of Sony's profits are depending on the PlayStation. They can't do price war anymore.

I've noticed current PS4 bundles with one game are around $350 USD.  The Xbox One S with Halo is $300 USD.  And let's not for get that the Xbox One just outsold the PS4 in North America in the month of July.  If Sony wants to keep thanking their supporters for making the PS4 the best selling console, the PS4 need to drop in price very soon.

Don't worry. The PS4 slim will reverse things most likely, even if they only drop to $299. If it's dropped to $249, PS4 will likely outsell Xbox by a large margin, but they will not profit as much.
