Forums - Nintendo - Emily Rogers: NX Below XB1/PS4 In Power; Battery Life Is Not Great

I am a bit surprised about the fan. And disappointed about the lack of 3D.

I really hope they are going to release the true successor of 3DS.

Seems like this is aligning pretty well with what we've heard for some time now. I'm willing to give her the benefit of a doubt since Liam Robertson have confirmed some of her leaks.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

That would be interesting if its in the final build. The only tablet I know of with a fan in it is the Microsoft Surface.

This doesn't sound like Nintendo at all. They usually choose the quieter, less power consumption route.

Also, 3DS and the Wii U gamepad have cameras so NX would most likely have one, if not two.

Oh, my... I hope this isn't true, for Nintendo's sake.

This was always one of the dangers of going with an hybrid device, if you do everything perfect, you'll hit the ball out of the park, but if you make any mistake you'll end with a device that won't worth neither as a handheld nor as a home console.

With not only a fan, but a lousy one, a screen too big to carry it in your pocket and bad battery life, this device doesn't sound like a good handheld. And with the low power processor, those detachable controllers and again the loud fan, it doesn't bode well as a home console either.

Well, at least she's now sure that it will be region free. Let's look at the positive part of it!

Yeah, this is basically the worst possible way to do a hybrid device imo. Back when the Nintendo Fusion rumors first sprung up, this is not what came to my mind at all. I always thought something more along the lines of a 250-300 gflops Vita sized handheld and a seperate console that's on par with XB1/PS4, both on AMD x86 architecture for easy porting between the two, and easy PC/PS4/XB1 to NX console porting. Both able to play the same games with cross saves, games running at 540p-720p on the handheld and 900-1080p on the console, with lower graphics quality on the handheld (so like the difference between PC low and PC high between the two). 1st/2nd party devs releasing on both, 3rd party devs having the choice to release on just one device. Handheld and console sold seperately, with a bundle that saves you some money over buying both seperately.

By trying to make one device that does the job of two, it sounds like they ended up designing a device that's both a bad handheld and a bad console.

My first thoughts were of a single, multitouch screen, ARM powered handheld a little more powerful than PSVita and an x86 based home console with a regular controller and (at best) roughly on par with current consoles. Both devices could share most of its games (think of Smash 3DS/Wii U or Mario Kart 7/8) and the handheld would act as an additional controller similar to the Wii U Gamepad.

Going that way, Nintendo would still be able to cater both handheld and home console users while maximising their software productivity and still hoping (minimally) to appeal third parties.

Please excuse my bad English.

Former gaming PC: i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Current gaming PC: R5-7600, 32GB RAM 6000MT/s (CL30) and a RX 9060XT 16GB

Just thinking out loud... it's pretty usual for modern laptops to run at variable clocks in order to save battery and it may be the case for NX too. Also it's possible NX may need active cooling only when docked and running full speed.

edit:

I'll make a guess.

The NX is indeed based on the Tegra X1 20nm chip, just like the devkits (as Eurogamer reported). When the console is docked it is exactly equivalent to the Nvidia Shield TV in terms of raw power (which is active cooled), so we're talking 512gflops.When detached the console runs about half-speed to save battery, so it becomes more or less equivalent to the WiiU (which is more than enough power for a portable device imo). Even running half-speed I believe the X1 wouldn't be terribly energy efficient, add a 6.2 screen and you'll have a 'not great' battery life.

I also wound't be suprised if we'll get the Tegra X2 chip for the New NX revision in a couple of years.

This is a terrible design idea. There will be cracked screens all over the place. It won't hold up to the strain that handhelds bear on a daily basis. You won't be able to give this to some kids and tell them to have fun. The thing will be destroyed after the first drop.

Again, she does not state her sources. She also mentions that they are just rumours that should be taken with a grain of salt, so why listen to what she's saying at all?

Why not?

Emily Rogers updated today with these two tid-bits, reiterating it's below an XB1 in power, and from what she's heard the battery life is not great (worse than 3DS?).

Also no camera/mic on the main unit which seems kinda weird. The "dock" has 2 USB 2.0 ports and 1 USB 3.0.

Nintendo is "ahead" of schedule on a March launch according to her, probably means there will be a good amount of software.

Take it for whatever it's worth. I have no idea if she's right or wrong. This is her rundown:

Here is what you can expect from the final retail product:

  • Custom Nvidia GPU chip
  • Region Free (No region lock)  <– Confirmed this.
  • Six inch (6.2 inch?) multi-touch screen (Heard nothing about a stylus)
  • The touchscreen has 720p resolution. <— 100% Confirmed.
  • 32GB of built-in internal storage
  • SD card support
  • Supports USB 2.0 and 3.0
  • The dock has two 2.0 usb ports and one 3.0 usb port.
  • The device is around 14 – 15 mm in thickness.
  • The right analogue stick will be below the face buttons.
  • Camera and microphone are not built into the NX portable device.
  • Cooling is still a little noisy
  • Detachable controllers (motion controls and next-gen vibration technology) <– Everything Laura Kate Dale said in her article was correct.
  • Share / Social button that Laura Kate Dale posted is true.
  • There are at least two shoulder buttons. I haven’t heard anything yet about triggers.
  • Battery Life — Ehhh not great. I haven’t heard an exact number of hours, but it doesn’t sound great.
  • Below PS4 and XB1 in raw power.
  • Supports Unreal Engine 4 and Unity Engine.

Note: I am not saying that NX won’t have a mic or camera. I am saying that the camera and mic aren’t built inside of the NX portable device.

Kinda gross if true. Former more than latter. Again, if true, looks pretty good overall.

What a stupid statement. You can't say it doesn't sound great without knowing a number. Just tell the number.

I doubt the final device will have a fan. The Google Pixel C tablet, which has a Tegra X1 sitting in it, doesn't seem to have a fan, so I'm guessing the Tegra can run cool enough without one. Maybe docked?
