Figured I'd post this here, too, since you were concerned about the optical port.

Not sure if the manual addresses this, but I think there is an optical port, for the users who were worried about that.  At least I think so.  Captured this from the Youtube unboxing.

Notice the port by the yellow triangle.  I think that's it.

did you watch the video? he clearly said that there is no optical port. I am really disappointed. I am not buying this POS. So much being for the players and removing a feature that many of players use it for head sets or theater audio systems. Sony needs to know that not a lot of people can buy a new console, a new 4k TV, a new sourrund system with no optical, and a new VR device at the same time. Arrogant Sony is back with the anti-player sentiment supported by a huge players base and winning against xbox.

Well, good thing the new PS4 will be cheap so you can buy a new AVR!

Wait... You're flipping out because they removed an audio port barely anyone on Earth ever uses? xD

I agree with this. No need to flip out. If he wants to use optical out, the OG PS4 has him covered.

Of course, I would like to know why there looks to be a port there. There's also a yellow triangle there, drawing attention to it, yet the vid maker doesn't say a damn thing about either.

Barley anyone on earth use it? If you dont use it, then it doesnt mean that no one the earth use it. I would suggest that you check the NeoGaf thread about the new slim and see that almost someone raises the issue of optical in almost every page in the thread. Sony just made many devices used by gamers obsolete without taking into consideration the following:

  - The world economy is not at its best, people can't keep changing things for Sony to save money

 - A new Neo coming, needing a new 4k TV, and then you have to pay for VR, and then you may want to replace your surround system since optical port is removed. Converters doesnt typically give the same audio quality.

There's an alternative for the few [vocal] people like you: The current PS4 model.

As for the rest, you are not required to buy a 4K TV to use the Neo or Scorpio. The consoles will work just fine on a regular 1080p screen. You should know that there are still plenty of things that can be improved by having more horsepower while sticking to 1080p resolution. Framerate, draw distance, shadow quality and lighting in general, tesselation, among plenty of other graphical features. So again, you won't be required to have a 4K TV to benefit from Neo and Scorpio's improved hardware. Games on PC, for example, using 1080p resolution and current hardware parts, look quite a bit better than their console counterparts. Resolution isn't everything when it comes to picture quality.

Reminds of The Great Don Mattrick...... if you dont have Internet and cant be online, then you can use Xbox 360.....

We are not few by the way, I will be starting an online petition soon to boycott the new PS4 slim for removing the Optical output.

For everyone who freaks out because there no optical, that i believe too that noone use it, except if he leaves alone in soundproof wall house, he can still buy the regular ps4 or he can use the wirlees headset 2.0 or the in ear headset with cancel noice. You can hear perfect with those

Overall the slim looks like a cheap ps4 console with no uselles ports, flashy lighths, glossy pastic, unecesary 4k video and UHD crap and its looks like Sony target 199$ price easy win! Thats the definition of slim console lower cost, lower price, Who going to make a slim console the same price with fat?
ohhh.... maybe some they doing it ohhhhh...
I can't wait for 7 September

Don Mattrick? Yeah, because buying a last gen console instead of the new current gen one is SO the same as buying a current gen console instead of its remodel. -__-

I know many, many gamers, and not a single one of them ever used the optical out on any of the consoles they owned that had that port. That's anecdotal, sure. But considering your last sentence, that's pretty much the kind of reply you deserve.

Seriously, a petition... I'll refrain from commenting about that. And I think you should refrain from venting more about this.

If  you have a headset with a mixamp, like Astro A40 TR, like I do, not having a optical port is a big deal. I'm expecting a ton of 1 star reveiws from people because of this. Hopefully the Neo has it, or I won't be picking one up.

Yea, good luck with that petition.

You mentioned the Neo above. Not sure why. The Slim is a way to get the PS4 for real cheap, so all unneccesary things have been removed and doesn't seem to do 4K like the XBO S. I'm starting to think they really are dropping to $249, now. The Neo, on the other hand, is going to be the top of the line model. I'm sure it'll have all the bells and whistles, including a 4K upscaler, 4K Bluray player, and, yes, even an optical port.

I'm also think they may just call it the PS4K. It would be a great way to differentiate them.

A petiton because it lacks a feature that very few people use?

It was probably cut to save every penny they could, because their goal is to get its costs down as much as possible, so it can retail at a lower price.

I think thats kinda silly.. anyways there are solutions to the issue:
get one of these:
