Well maybe because there already was something called "handball", so we decided to take football instead. It does involve a small bit of kicking a ball, right?

Because Soccer wasn't the only sport named "football"... many sports held that name. Including Rugby Football.

Rugby Football in europe was commonly shortened to Rugby. When American Rules Rugby Football was developed in needed it's own shortened name. So they went with Football.

Soccer itself stole the name "Football" from a variety of other games.

 i agree. football is the NFL. The other football is known as Soccer for those who don't know this.

Yes this is one of the few times I've seen the Wiimote been able to completely reinvent an entire genre and make a it a hell of a lot better than any previous setup. This is truly revolutionizing a series. Kudos to the guys at Konami.

Ha, no problem.  What most Europeons don't realize is that their oldest Football clubs are in fact... Rugby clubs.

In a way Soccer stole the name from American Football... or at the least... Rugby.
