Because Soccer wasn't the only sport named "football"... many sports held that name. Including Rugby Football.

Rugby Football in europe was commonly shortened to Rugby. When American Rules Rugby Football was developed in needed it's own shortened name. So they went with Football.

Soccer itself stole the name "Football" from a variety of other games.
