Forums - General - Rio Olympics opening ceremony Discussion.

As a Brazilian that isn't Carioca I like the ceremony in general. I really feared they would do something embarrassing, but I'm actually proud and relieved that worked fine. But, that said, here comes my critics. I missed they showing some more serious stuff on it, like key points in brazillian history and honor brazillian writers, scholars, musicians and historical figures. I mean, they only showed a little bit of Portuguese arriving and a little of the other peoe that came here, but NOTHING was showed about our history, no colonization, no fight for independence, no fight for ending slavery or the great achievements of 20th century like the construction of Brasilia or the fight for democracy during the military dictatorship in the 60's and 70's. I think it just focused on showing " Brazilians are party people and Brazil Party Country" stereotypes. They didn't even touch the multiculturalism that we have in each region. I do have to remember of Chinese Opening Ceremony in 2008 where they at least tried to show more history and the build of China as a great nation. It was good but could have been much more. And i know there are time constraints, but they spend a lot of time showing people dancing in lajes. I really think it would be better if other city had been hosting the Olympics, like Brasilia or Sao Paulo, they would have shown other face of Brazil.

I thought it was fine. I learned something actually, I didn't know Brazil had a large Japanese population. If this was a "cheap" opening ceremoney that it just goes to show you don't need to spend a ridiculous amount on these events. That was more than good enough and still had enough razzle dazzle stuff.

I really liked it. Gave people a better understanding of Brazil's history and achievements. Also, a good environmental message without being too overbearing along with offering hope. Excited for the rest of the games.

It was okay but you probably need to be drunk or high to truly enjoy it since opening ceremonies tend to be weird. Also since the next Summer Olympics are in Tokyo I'm expecting the weirdness level will be turned up a couple of levels.

As I said in the offcial thread, it was way inferior to London and Beijing but i still liked it, it was pretty enjoyable, better than I expected after so many bad news.

Also the olimpic flame looks great
