And people still think that this is a good idea...

You guys are worrying about issues that don't exist. And hypothetical situations based on nothing at all, all the evidence actually points to the contrary.

Devs or publishers will always build their games first for the largest market out there. By the time the Neo is at 10M, the core PS4 could very well be at 70M. Its ridiculous to think that devs will build for 10M first and ignore the 70M. That just makes zero sense. Devs will jist optimize their games for the core PS4 and then add in whatever extra the neo mode permits.

By thr time we have hardware in a PS console (probably like PS6) that will be able to run games that just can't run on the base PS4 (even in 720p@30fps) Everyome would have at the time updated their console to either a Neo/PS5/PS5neo. Unless that person plans on using the PS4 for 9-12yrs. And the neo/PS5 iterations will probably be able to run the PS6 games on some sort of level (even at 720p).

And all this talk about 1yr smartphone cycles is just sensationalist chatter. No one has said that consoles will come out every 1yr, if anything its more like every 3-4yrs. And as lomg as games remain forward and backward compatible I don't see the issue.

Well, just look at the Xbox and you see that it's not sensationalist chatter. Xbox one released in 2013, Xbox one S released in 2016, Xbox Scorpio will launch in 2017. If it's not a 1 year cycle, then it's damn close to one.

Hardware is all abstracted anyway, so differences in the underlying hardware is of little importance to development these days, not to mention most games are built on ready-made game engines that are optimised for various hardware and software configurations anyway.

With that said... Maybe with the increase in power with the Neo/Scorpio, Epic might be willing to port Unreal Tournament now?

Ok. Just be be clear. What you sre saying is;

  • XB1 in 2013
  • XB1s in 2016 (which is just the same old XB1 but in a smaller chassis)
  • And XB1Scorpio in 2017.
You see three releases, i see one revision and one upgrade. I will never understnd the sense in buying a slim console to replace an existing console that is still working perfectly.

But with 4k upscaling and HDR. :P

Last gen plenty people found a different face plate or paint job enough reason to buy a new 360 (before the current one could go rrod/e71 probably) At least the innards are improved this time :)

i think this is the most consumer friendly thing the industry has ever done.

Yes? Will you buy the PS5 or will you wait 2.5 years until the best version comes out?

as i get few to no shits about having the shiniest pixels i'll wait as long as i can to upgrade and keep playing on my orginal ps4 thanks to forward compatibility.  ..just like i did with my iphone when i just recently upgraded from a 4 to an SE because i don't feel the need to take upgrades nearly as often as some people do.

then when i do upgrade (probably around the ps5.5) i will be thankful for a console that still plays my entire library of games on the new console instead of not being able to play them like the current norm is between console generations.

and if you are worried about having "the best" version then remember releases of a better version of tech happens pretty much daily.  waiting 2.5 years won't give me "the best version" anyways because another "best" version comes out 3 years after than and again 3 years after that and again 3 years after that....

i'm not bitter or angry or sad about not always having "the best".  that sounds like a personal problem for you not a problem with the new way hardware releases are going.

Might as well just slap a PC sticker on the home consoles now.

I buy the argument and it's completely sound. Plus Tim Sweeney is a great man in the world of video games. We all owe him thanks for giving so much technology.

I'm gonna quote something that explains why it is so brilliant:

What is he so thrilled at? As far as we know MS and Sony won't let devs do anything new with Scorpio and Neo, just res and graphics settings upgrade.

Cause he can keep selling the same engine without spending much effort at making better or new things. Just shinier pixels.

Exactly!! You got it right.  I think that the people excited for Neo-Scorpio dissmissing the optimization issues are not seeing the forest for the trees,, so to speak.

If games are to be forward compatible as thought, it will make devs even more risk averse, they'll want to sell to the biggest market and won't be pushing the envelope anymore. We could be saying goodbye to better A.I. better physics, action games with more chars on screen etc etc. We'll just get the same thing over and over, just prettier, even worse than how it is now with annual franchises.
