Forums - Gaming - Dev studios / game companies that went from mediocre to good and beyond

Because their games were first sort of "meh" but they seem to have put their shit together and now they make good content.

Any devs/company that comes to mind?

Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

From Software. They made decent to good games, but with Souls and Bloodborne, they went to excellent studio status.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Arkane Studios seemed to come out of nowhere with Dishonored. Never played their earlier games but they don't look that great. I know they've had a ton of earlier projects cancelled, so I'm surprised they lasted long enough to find success.

Huh...I'd take Dark Messiah of Might and Magic and specially Arx Fatalis over Dishonored any time of day.

Actually I find it usually goes the other way :(

I can think of a lot of good studios that lost their way, but not a lot that escaped mediocrity.

I guess Rare would apply. It made decent games before 1994, but once it partnered with Nintendo it rose into the stratosphere.

Atlus for one. Hadn't even heard of them before Persona 3. Still haven't played any games from before then, but they were probably mediocre so...

Possibly Guerilla Games, although calling Killzone mediocre would be an insult to all games that actually are mediocre, it was so much worse than that!

What

The SMT games before Persona 3 are FAR from mediocre man. They might not be famous in the west, but in Japan it's always been big for a reason.  Also, Persona 2 has an amazing story as well. P1 is debatable.

Killzone games, whether you like them or not, have always been very well made games.  Maybe not amazing, but definetly not mediocre.

Can you tell me why you think either of them are mediocre?

Naughty Dog. Yes they existed pre Crash Bandicoot.

Definitely From Software.
King's Field and all the other series were good games, but with the Souls series and Bloodborne they started do make real masterpieces!

Was just thinking the same thing. More good stufios losing their way that i can think of than bad studios becoming good.
