Dev studios / game companies that went from mediocre to good and beyond

Arkane Studios seemed to come out of nowhere with Dishonored. Never played their earlier games but they don't look that great. I know they've had a ton of earlier projects cancelled, so I'm surprised they lasted long enough to find success.
