I'd probably go with Mario. It's likely the most diverse series out there, covering the most varying of gameplay styles and genres. And they are very replayable. I still play some old Mario games just for good ol' fun, alone and with friends.

So yeah... Mario takes it for me.

Eh, I wouldn't take it that way, personally. I'd argue it's a combination of quality, variety, and replayability. Metroid is probably my favorite game series, but I definitely wouldn't choose it. I'd go with something like Smash Bros; something that people can play consistently, and can be played seriously or simply for fun.

What this question eventually boils down to for me is: If I had to pick a gaming franchise that I would play until I got tired of gaming and quit, which franchise would I prefer to do so with?

And the answer is Ratchet & Clank. Screw the other people that might not want Ratchet & Clank, but instead Final Fantasy. You'll learn when you have no choice *evil laugh*.
