Forums - Microsoft - Xbox One S Supports 4K Gaming Upscaling, MS Confirms

Um, why wouldn't they have said this at the reveal? Seems like a pretty significant feature...

They did in a way. This is old news, so it's not really surprising unless you weren't paying attention to the original announcement.
It was a given that games would be upscaled to 4k when the console was going to have 4k blu-ray support and a scaler to suit, I'm surprised anyone even needed clarification.

I don't get it. Aren't most XBO games in 720p? So, it will upscale these games, the majority of games from 720p to 4K?

Correct.
It still won't look as good as a native 1080P image that is upscaled to 4k though, which most TV's will do on the Playstation 4's behalf anyway, the only caveat with that approach is that it can introduce increased display latency depending on Display of course.

We still have no clue what the AMD SoC is packing, and there's been no specification leaks or anything so far, but the $299 Xbox One S will directly combat Sony's new upgraded PlayStation 4K console in the 4K gaming department--at least when it comes to upscaling. Given the $299 price tag, the Xbox One S surely won't go head-to-head against the PS4 Neo's boosted specs, but it's quite interesting to see Microsoft offering 4K upscaling in its mid-tier system.

It is likely using a Polaris 11 derived GPU which has an improved video decoding and scaling block and support for HDR.

All the previous sub-1080P Xbox One titles were being upscaled to 1080P on 1080P TV sets(still not as good as native 1080P), this is no different really.

My PS4 supports 4k gaming 'upscaling'. Otherwise there would be no image on the screen. If it did not, no PS4 would be playable on a 4K TV. This is nothing new.

Urm, no it doesn't work like that. An easy way to prove this is not the case is that the ps4 only has hdmi 1.4 which isn't capable of outputting 4k at 60fps, upscaled or not. The console doesn't need to upscale to 4k to output to a 4k tv, you can plug any hdmi device into your 4k tv and it will display. The display handles it for these devices, not the console.

I see. Where does the Xbox One S differ in this regard though?

It handles the upscaling itself, instead of the TV. Which should give it an advantage in certain areas such as display latency. It really depends on your TV how much an advantage it's going to be. Some tv's are rubbish at upscaling themselves so teh XBO S having it's own will be a good benefit, but other tv's are really good at upscaling themselves too.

Since I bought a XBR-65X855C I believe the TV upscalling will be good enough

Mess, I didn't even realise it had a 4k blurry player, I thought it was just 4k output. Ms better market the hell out of this box.

Yup, I didn't know it had a 4k Bluray driver either... thought 4k output as just for digital content (netflix etc). Microsoft better get there marketing in order if people like us who regularly frequent gaming sites don't even know what the thing does.

Yep it depends on the tv. With Alan Wake I got better image quality on my projector by letting the projector upscale 720p to 1080p (setting the 360 to 720p output) instead of letting the 360 handle the full upscale. If you have a high end 4K tv you might get a more pleasing image just leaving it in 1080p.
It depends how the upscaler is going to work. If it's a simple quadrupling of pixels of the 1080p buffer to reduce lag and unnecessary switching of display modes than the tv can likely improve iq at the cost of added latency.

Interesting im not sure if i want one since i already have a normal xb1.
