Forums - Sony - USA: Sony Linux Lawsuit Ends, Sony Will Pay Millions to Gamers

"In order to claim their 55 dollar reward, a gamer has to testify under oath that they purchased a Playstation 3 and installed Linux on it, provide proof of their purchase of it, and submit some proof that they used the OtherOS system"

Lol good luck proving that.

I think Sony will probably be ok with this outcome. Who actually used Linux and which of those will bother with this just to get $55?

Linux was removed because it was used to crack the PS3. Sony removed Linux and saved them from potentially losing a lot of money.

I used it a little for testing, but could not prove it... The fact is it was not a bad idea, Linux is a full OS, you can plug mouse and keyboard, it boots pretty fast, so it could have been a way to have a fully working PC... That was a selling factor for me (less than gaming and BR, but still). Anyway, 256 MB of memory, no optimization for the CPU, and the GPU not working by sony's design, it was pretty crappy. Only someone for the very short time the CPU shone could really have some use.

It's what sony said was used to crack the PS3 system, that was based on BSD, which doesn't really makes much sense.

It does't mater the reason why they did it, Sony removed the functionality after advertising it. They are in the wrong, even if some people think this feature wasn't much of a big deal. Can you imagine if they removed the Blu-Ray movie playback functionality? Exactly.

Is amazing and makes me livid to see a company, that (in my opinion) relies heavily on its PR department, face law for its line walking marketing shenanigans for once.

Did somebody say they weren't?

I have no issue with this outcome but Sony were stuck between a rock and a hard place. They were wrong to remove features but I can understand why they did it.

What utter bollocks, proven to be at fault for advertising the feature but the method required to get the payment from this is going to deter 99.99999% of people from doing it, unless someone drums up a quick and easy way to get the payment in order to get a cut from everyone, there is big money to be made if a lawyer was to set up a system to get this payment.

This is a huge blow to Sony. -_-

You are joking right? Because it really isn't.

It is when you remember that, without the PS4's success, they'd fall like Enron.

I suggest you take a look at Sony's financials. First of all, Playstation isn't the segment that's making the most profit for them. Second of all, they turned a nice profit last fiscal year (as in, the company as a whole). This isn't a "huge blow" at all. It's a minor annoyance.

It's still a mistake that they should make sure doesn't happen again.

Yeah exactly. Not a huge blow for Sony.

Lol I just thank God that my life isn't in a state that I'd actually need to go out and pick this offer up.
