Forums - Sony - Playstation 4 NEO Launching in 2016, good? Why?

This year, some of the biggest franchises in gaming, leaves last gen behind. Millions of PS3 and Xbox 360 owners will therefore be "forced" to buy into the current generation, if they wish to play their favorite franchises.

  • Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
  • Battlefield 1
  • Final Fantasy XV
  • Watch Dogs 2
  • Titanfall 2
  • Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
  • NBA 2K17
  • Mafia III
  • Dishonored 2
  • South Park: The Fractured But Whole

I would love to hear your opinions.

Why do you think a 2016 launch is a good idea? :)

PS4 Neo is the reason Sony targeted 20 million PS4 shipment in this fiscal year. It will do great. Plus early 2017 Sony lineup is also really strong.

and what if only like a couple of those games actually support Neo, then what?

All games released after 1st October have to support Neo as standard.  So all the big hitters later this year.

Prediction (June 12th 2017)

Permanent pricedrop for both PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro in October.

PS4 Slim $249 (October 2017)

PS4 Pro $349 (October 2017)

I think that is better to launch the Neo the sooner than lather, The Neo is supposed to be a Mid-gen upgrade for the PS4 and the console will not have any Exclusive. I'm still expecting the PS5.

Year head start on Scorpio is perfect, although i don't expect Scorpio to sell anyway.

The only stipulation for a Neo game is 1080P and nothing else, which is not exactly the most out there feature. Devs are already hitting 1080P.

From the interpretation of documentation, its possible to suggest that even this resolution reuirement is only mandatory if a dev choose to do any enhancements with the neo mode.

And this point, shipping with a neo mode is merely a formality and to ensure uniformity in licensing of software for the PS4, and not that any actual enhancements need to be made (but if devs choose to make enhancements, 1080P is mandatory).

We don't really know until something is official.

It will be up to the developer then.  Neo mode ensures 1080p (obviously upscaled if not 4k native) and fluid 60FPS gameplay.   Whether something like improved textures are added is an unknown and is a developer to developer decision.  However, I would like to note that Andrew made it clear that they are waiting to have more content to show so this means they are hoping to have a ton of neo mode enable games when it launches.

Do you really think that users still on the 7th gen consoles who haven't upgraded yet will go straight for the NEO?

Generally the people who are still playing on consoles approaching 10 years of age most likely don't really care about the graphics of games or are on a budget waiting until the console/games are going cheap.

It may open the door for them as pre-owned consoles will get cheaper with people re-buying the NEO and trading in there original PS4 causing a flood of pre-owned PS4's but I very much doubt people on PS360 are waiting for NEO to move into the 8th gen.

I don't think there's enough 4k adoption percentage for it to move mass amounts. Neo is for 4k gaming and will be marketed towards 4k gaming. I still think Sony will announce the slim (Gamescom?) and that will be the cause for Sony hitting 20M sold this year.

Yes, beacuse we will have price cut for PS4. :)
