Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Reggie on NX: "For us it's not about specs"

so we'll have another Wii or WiiU level of success, it's life or death once again, depending on how good their idea sells and how 3rd parties are willing to invest

on the other hand, we already know that for them "it's not about specs", let's hope they appreciate that for the majority of gamers and game makers, it is pretty much about the specs

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

I think it'll be about 1 TFLOP using mobile-centric parts like Nvidia's next-gen Tegra.

They can't use laptop/home PC GPUs because it won't scale well to the portable, or at least not nearly as well as a natively mobile tech (tablet/phone) chip would.

1 TFLOP would allow them to have some PS4/XB1 ports, but it would still scale decently with a 5 watt portable (250 GFLOPS at 1/4th of the console) allowing them to share games between the two without too much trouble.

I don't think Nintendo generally gives a crap about broad third party support though, they know already they're not going to get it, that is MS/Sony territory now and they simply can't compete there.

Not really...if they want to go the 'shared libary route' they just need use the handheld as the 'base' platform and the 'upscale' the game for the home console. After all you are speculating on a 250 gflop handheld (which is better than a Ps3 or a 360) and the Ps4 was filled with cross-gen titles until yesterday.

Nvidia cancelled the Tegra project. They are out of mobile SoCs. Their SoC were mediocre anyway, but the rest of the mobile GPUs are simply pathetic. There's no way they will use one of them on a console. It would land closer to Wii U than to the X1.

If the NX is slower then the current gen (not neo or scorpio) I will just seriously lose all interest in the console

Once again not listening to fans and third party developers and then wondering why nobody wants to develop for their systems.

Yes, weak specs.

Not what I mean. Aonuma said since the first trailer that because the new tech in the Wii U, BotW was possible, because before it they had to put a lot of boundaries in the world.

On top of that, Nintendo can deliver even better games using better tech. They clearly use it in more ways than making it prettier games.

you are kind of giving them the reason here xD

See above. This game would have never been possible on the Wii.

You kind of prove Reggie's point as he's basically saying they'll focus on a range that is functional and not over the top.

They haven't cancelled the Tegra, they have been working on a Parker-based next-gen Tegra successor to the X1 for a while.

The fact that Nvidia hasn't found a different vendor for them other than car manufacturers (which is a niche market for now) is great for Nintendo. That means they could negotiate a price on the chip likely for dirt cheap.

AMD doesn't have experience or anything major really in this tech space, everything they make is for higher end laptops or full blown PC towers, that doesn't scale well to a portable handheld where Nintendo likely will sell the majority of their hardware.

Still want it their way or the highway. Get with the times Nintendo.

I dont really need the powerhouse machine, I really dont. But this is just getting silly.

So, another Wii U it is then?

Because that turned out so well

Oh Reggie...not saying the NX will be weak, but that just sounds like something Nintendo fans don't really want to hear.

Watch the thread , nintendo fans already acepted it and now they even praised them for it, now go check the rumour threads about the NX being actualy powerfull, people loved those rumours.

The instant reggie says it does not mather specs people changed their mind in an instant and dont care about specs again.

Then later they will complain nintendo does not have third partys and that 2 or 3 nintendo games is not enough.

Its like a cicle and its amusing to watch.

It's the ciiiiircle of liiiiiife ...

Stage 1 (Excitement): New Nintendo console! They're going to do it all right now! They learned their lessons! It's going to be super powerful!

Stage 2 (Denial): Who needs third parties anyway! Nintendo has great exclusives like that new Mario Kart and Zelda and Splatoon. Just wait! Sales will explode!

Stage 3 (Reality): Man it sure would be nice to have something to play during the next 3 months. Nintendo should at least market what they have!
