Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Reggie on NX: "For us it's not about specs"

Just because NX isn't about specs doesn't mean it won't have decent specs. Reggie is only saying, specs aren't what makes the game. Some of the most graphically inferior games have become the best selling games of all time. For example, Mario Kart Wii. The game looks like trash for the era it was in. Looked like Gamecube 1.5 graphics. But guess what, tens of millions of people have bought and played the game. This is old news at this point, why are people surprised by this?

You can be affordable, powerful, and create games that reach wide audiences a the same time. That essence was the Wii and DS.

Thank you! This is what I've been trying to say!

Another good example: The Playsation 2. It was the weakest platform of its generation and still kicked everyones ass!
Just because Reggie said that they dont aim to have the most powerful console it doesn't mean that NX will still be Wii U Level. He ist simply saying what it wont be: Another 500 bucks 4K machine, something we all new from the beginning!

So lets all calm down and wait what the Big N has been working on, well know soon enough!

Exactly, he isn't saying that strong hardware is not important but that the games come first in their eyes. I can't blame that some people feel pessimistic since Reggie did say the exact same thing for the Wii U and we all know what happened there. My guess is that the NX will be as strong or slightly stronger than the X1/PS4 but obviously weaker than the out of left field Neo and Scorpio.

If the NX can proved 2 terraflops I would be stoked. Heck, I would probably be ok with 1.5 hehe. NX should be able to handle every single game from every developer if so so the hardware wouldnt be the issue. The Wii U has ~350 gigaflops I believe so the difference will definately show.

I have to say, Wii U brought some of the best 1st party content Nintendo has ever made. Wii U houses my favorite 3D Mario, Now Zelda, Mario Kart, Smash Bros. and I could keep going but you get the point. Wii U had great software and for the most part the software sold really well. Wii U just came out at the wrong time with the wrong approach, wrong price.

I mean, for me as long as Nintendo makes kickass content like they've been doing for the MOST part, I'll be fine. If I want games that are only possible on PS or XB, I'll get those consoles. It would be great to get all that content between Nintendo and 3rd parties on one console but that's not Nintendo's priority for whatever reason.

Don't get me wrong the Wii U hasn't been short on amazing quality games, the issue was on the large gaps between their games early on. I definately agree on your point that they took the wrong approach with the Wii U as some people thought the gamepad was an add-on for the Wii.

The Games were the Wii Us least problem, or to put it another way, pretty much the only thing that didnt cause more problems (If you overlook the delays).
The messaging and marketing (or lack thereof) alone had a much stronger impact than Nintendo probably expected. Add to that a quick abandonment from third partys, a high price, and the looming arrival of the stronger XB1 and PS4 and its over.

At the same time, getting cornered like that was good, because it brought out some of the best games they made in a long time:
Pikmin 3 is just beautiful, Mario 3D World as perfect a 3D platformer as possible, MK8 and Smash are among their series best iterations!
Even better: they finaly started experimenting and being brave again: First slowly with Dlcs, then more with games like Splatoon and Mario Maker and now of course we are getting a Zelda unlike any we ever had before!

If those are signs of whats to come, I am getting really exited for NX and the next Mario Miyamoto has been teasing.

On the specs side, the ideal sweet spot would be about half the level of Neo/Two. That would make it significantly cheaper to produce, but not weak enough to hurt anything - especially with Vanilla 4/One presumably on the market as long as the 4K systems are.

Those saying that Nintendo can't or shouldn't compete in the console arms race don't know what they're talking about. There was a time this was true, when MS and Sony jumped the gun to HD and sold money-losing consoles. Following suit would have been suicide for Nintendo. But today's 4 and One are far from bleeding edge tech and don't drain funds from their producers, especially with annual fees. Nintendo could easily make a competitive machine that turns a profit, especially if they leveraged their massive back catalogue to produce a desirable subscription service for old games. Nintendoflix.

The great success of Which was that it was innovative, cheap and had mass market appeal. Its great failing was that it lacked the power to play major third party titles, causing gamers to upgrade to the 360 or 4 after HD TV's became common.

Nintendo has a potential home run with the new Zelda title. It has the attention of both core gamers and mainstream consumers. For NX to be a success it will need to build on that and offer some new and interesting titles and features, but also enough processing power that third parties can bring their titles over without issue. Should NX look like an early success, 3rd parties will have interest, and Nintendo needs them.

Under 1 TFLOP:

1-1.3 TFLOP:

1.6-2.2 TFLOP:

2.5 TFLOP+:

Neo-Scorpio Range:

I'd be relatively happy with 2 TFLOP, which means Nintendo will go with 1 TFLOP exactly.

If they had released their games on PS4 I would have bought those and probably platinumed:

- Super mario World 3D
- Yoshi
- Splatoon
- Mario Maker
- Galaxy 1 & 2 remastered
- Wind waker
- tens of their old Virtual console games.

I am sure I wouldn't have being alone to buy those on PS4 or XB1..

I hope it's 2TF, but it will probably closer to half that knowing Nintendo. Hope they have some incredible lineup of games planned.

lol either trolling or very stupid. The MINIMUM expected for NX is 2.5 tflops, probably 3.5-4.5 tflops.
