Forums - Sales - NA + Japan Numbers out!

Wii and PS3 were pretty darn impressive.

No explanation for the ps3 in NA....blu-ray 2.0 and Hot Shots Golf 5 were the only major things to happen for the week.

Leo-j you said the same thing last year about expecting too much from the wii ;)

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.

I said the ps3 would outsell the 360 when it is priced at $399.99 in every region, and sales would rise significantly, therefore I was correct.

I expect to be right again this time.

What caused PS3 to rise so much from last week in NA?

The Blu-ray drive is the secret sauce. People are slowly learning about the death of HD-DVD... people are slowly moving to HDTVs.

Sony has a kinda double pronged draw to the PS3 for 2008... 1.) The continual move to HD and the Blu-ray victory... 2.) Some franchise titles and big exclusive games.

Some are expecting the Blu-ray angle to be pretty effective:

Research: PS3 To Drive Blu-ray Market, Sell 13 Million Consoles By End Of '08

I'm assuming that means 13 million in 2008. Which is pretty good against my estimated 9 million for 360, but not so good compared to 22 or so million for the Wii. They'll be neck and neck with the 360 if my predictions are correct, besides the PS3.

Yeah... they're saying 13 million in all of '08.  That's about 3 million higher than a pretty straitforward analysis might suggest.  If I had to guess, I'd have thrown out 10 million as the '08 total.

I'm not really sure what the 360 will do... I can see it doing  as low as 5.5 million or as much as 9 million... I tend to think it will be close to that 5.5, things can go downhill fast, especially when your direct competition is having a good year.

Either way, I'd agree that they (the 360/PS3) will likely be just around neck and neck at the end of 08...

As for the Wii... no one will be neck and neck with that anytime soon. :)

Blu-Ray 2.0

It's the HD player to get. As more people move to HD, more PS3's will sell.

What exactly is the big deal with Blu-ray 2.0? I heard someone else talking about it, saying that only the PS3 supports it (or that other players have a harder time updating to it or something). Does it make the picture better or something? I don't see how a firmware update could push sales in any way whats-so-ever.

In a country of 300 million, 10k is nothing. Just a minor change can effect sales when the numbers are so low. The reason I think 2.0 sells PS3, is when people go to buy a BD player, the sales people have a strong reason to push the PS3. I bet BD players this week sold the same as last week, but the percentage of them that were PS3's were higher.

And all 2.0 really does is bring it up to what HD-DVD has all along. Better support for online stuff, and added features. The picture still looks the same.

I am still surprised by just how piss poor the Sony sales are in Japan.

As for the 360, it is not good that it is still behind, but on the positive side, if it can keep the margin this close for the rest of the year, it'll take a loooong time for the PS3 to catch up.

The firmware only came out two nights ago...
