Forums - Gaming Discussion - Too Much Hype?

Does anyone else here thine should get game abnouncemts no longer than 6-8 months before launch?

I think we are just sinking deeper and deeper into a hype cycle that doesn't seem to be getting any better. Its so bad that every singke year new games get announced that even then end up being at least 18 months away. Every year. Why that is crazy is that at that rate they cohld all just hold those announcemmets back for 12 months and announce the game 6 months from release.

But this need by publishers to one up their rivals has led to reveals that come way too early. I think something has to be done about that.

Nothing is going to change though. Forum video gamers demand hype so they can make console war lists and have electronic gasms.

- Only 38% of the games spoken about during the E3 2015 press conferences have actually been released.

- Of that 38% of games released, 33% weren’t released until 2016.

- Sony is the worst performer, with only one game released from its E3 2015 press conference in that calendar year – a small indie from Devolver Digital called Ronin.

- Sony also has the worst record for releasing games announced at its conference in the 12-months leading to the next E3, at only 23%

- EA and Nintendo are the most likely to release a game they showcase before the next E3, with 92% and 93% of their titles available respectively.

- Nintendo also released 83% of those games before Christmas 2015, which is the quickest turnaround by far.

- Sony and Microsoft did not release a single one of their newly announced titles from the last E3 in the 12-months since the event.

- Year-on-year, we are seeing a rise in games not being released following an E3 showcase. Our analysis shows 50% of Sony’s, and 60% of Microsoft’s E3 2014 press conferences did not see a release prior to E3 2015. These have increased to 77% and 63% respectively for this 12-month period.

I dont think thats an inherently a bad thing. It gives perspective to your purchase(the hardware I mean), in the sense that you know that there is more comming and your purchase will be worth for years to come.
What I do agree is companies that reveal games that will only release 3 or 4 years later.Thats ridiculous.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Yeah it's crazy. A company can easily "win" E3 on hype alone, without having to actually release anything. Just crazy.

Wow, that's damning.

Fallout 4 announcement was the best imo, a good showing of the game and early release date.

That's very interesting... and disturbing.

I strongly agree with OP. Glad that at least one of the big 3 stays away from this trend, so here's hope.

Yes, looking at No Man's Sky and Fallout 4. 2 opposites of the scale.

Hmm, pie.

Nintendo is the only company that really consistently does focus on short hype builds, although this gen they were pigeonholed into doing it with some non-Zelda IP to try and sell systems. Only Zelda really ends up bloated the way Nintendo usually does it, though.

Fallout 4 to me was one of the absolute kings of a short buildup. They absolutely killed it with that game.

You should check out my YouTube channel, The Golden Bolt!  I review all types of video games, both classic and modern, and I also give short flyover reviews of the free games each month on PlayStation Plus to tell you if they're worth downloading.  After all, the games may be free, but your time is valuable!
