the ability to do whatever the fuck they want.
I live in the US. I cant even fathom the concept of some unelected foriegn body making decisions for my country. It would be hypocritical for me to expect another country to do the same unless they choose to.

But that's exactly what the USA is! A bunch of different countries that joined together. English wasn't even a majority language till the last 100 years and the whole 'one nation' image is a fairly new concept. It had French Parts, English Parts, Spanish Parts, German Parts, Irish Parts, African Parts, Native People's Parts, etc. and all joined together for the common good.
Individual states have all sorts of different laws, but some mutually agreed upon common laws are federal and affect everyone. Did you know Murder isn’t even illegal under Federal Law?
But they have free trade, a giant transportation system, and free immigration across states, standarized safey etc. That’s what made the EU strong, and now UK will lose a whole bunch of business and clout. The EU will remain.
To me it’s like watching a person right their bicycle full speed into a brick wall. Sure, they have the Right to do it, but knowing the likely consequence, it just doesn’t seem very bright.

state not equal to a nation. The only state with a legit argument would be texas.
they were a bunch of english colonies they decided to band together. MAYBE prior to the civil war the structure would have felt like the UK setup. There are some regional differences but state to state you cant argue there is much difference. Drive from Ohio to Iowa (8 hour + drive going 70 mph) and get out and ask if you are in a different nation.
