Forums - Nintendo - Will NX be based on a Zen+Polaris APU?

NX is so confusing at the moment. Is Nintendo going for something crazy? Or is the home console going to be a normal console (finally!!)? To tell the truth, if I was designing a console at this point, I'd go with a mid-low end Zen/Polaris APU for futureproofing. We see what's going on with PS4. It's so young yet already getting a boost. I think that if NX is less powerful than PS4 Neo (let alone regular PS4), it's going to be a Wii U 2. I mean, 3rd parties won't even bother - I wouldn't. No gamer is going to care about the worst versions of games. And great exclusives? Sure, but how far can that take you? 15-20 mil? Xbone is slightly less powerful than PS4, yet the small difference turns into a massive mindshare and sales difference. A weak NX would suffer from the same thing.

I think it's time to go big or go home for Nintendo. And the time for doing so is perfect, since competition has its hands tied by previous designs, while N can take advantage of newest tech that isn't more expensive this time! A good modern 14 nm APU, 12 GB of RAM and they are in for the kill. And if they can offer the best multiplats in the business, people will actually care about them. I so much want to see a Zen/Polaris combo, please Ninty... Repay us for what you've done this gen.

This is the formula for success. This should be sent to Nintendo. This is what gamers want and would make NX sell 50 million consoles.

Isn't Polaris 11 quite weak? On par with a PS4? Which is too weak considering Xbone and PS4 will upgrade his consoles.

I would love for NX to be the very strongest console!

2.5 TFLOPS isn't weak ... that's basically double the XBox One, Nintendo's games would look unreal on such hardware and it would be a noticable bump over the PS4, not only 700 GFLOPS better but you're talking a generational leap in GPU architecture that would allow for great ability/efficiency in graphics rendering.

It wouldn't match a PS4 Neo in raw power, but it would be better than a current PS4 by a good amount and run at almost 1/3 the electricity while competely destroying the current XBox One. It would have no problem handling most any third party port.

If Nintendo followed through with that SCD patent and who knows they could go beyond a PS4 Neo even. 2 Polaris NX GPUs working together = 5 TFLOP of power that would eclipse even the PS4 Neo.

Is the GPU that AMD showed at the beginning of this year running Star Wars Battelfront at 50W estimated to be a 2.5 TFLOP GPU?

I think that's too weak for a console releasing in 2017. Typical Nintendo weak.

Why can't they at least be on par with PS4 Neo? What stops them? I say go for Polaris 10 if Polaris 11 can only provide 2.5TFLOPS.

Interestingly it looks like Polaris might be delayed into October, they are having production issues, *if* Nintendo is using Polaris-derived tech, perhaps that contributed to the delay of the NX? Kimishima said software was only one of the reasons NX was launching in March, not the only reason.

http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/polaris-validation-failed-might-launch-in-october-now.html

This rumour makes no sense. I mean, if nVidia is ready to release GTX 1070 and 1080 in June (though I totally expect it to be a paper launch with cards being virtually impossible to get), AMD will have a much easier job releasing Polaris 10 and 11. These AMD GPUs have smaller dies, thus they get more GPUs out of a single wafer and imperfect production process, which is characteristic for young tech, will hurt them less than it hurts nVidia. AMD should be able to produce more cards in the same time and for the same price, which I think was the wise choice. AMD did the right thing, while nVidia went for PR fireworks - as usual. I hope it pays for AMD

Moreover, right now the rumours are that AMD moved Vega to October, so they are actually speeding things up. Delaying Polaris to October? No way!

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

Cool to see other people on the same page I think N is in a unique position to take the lead - and if they ever want to make 3rd parties work, they have to give gamers a reason to choose their version of it. Having the best graphics and fps is the best thing they can give and right now it won't cost them extra, since the 14 nm process allows them to save in the long run.

Please Nintendo, please... Unless you hit the nail on the head with NX I won't be buying a single console this gen...

Then don't buy a single console ...

You know how hard it is for an under dog (AMD) to break their habbits ...
