Forums - Nintendo - Why Okami is Better than Any 3D Zelda

This topic should just be called "why Okami is the greatest game of all-time", because it is. I can't think of any other example of gameplay, visual design and audio being tied together so closely and so elegantly in a game of this scale.

I don't agree with all of OP's points - I think most of those things are delivered by the better Zelda games as well - but Okami has a level of creativity that trumps most of the Zelda series and most games in general, coupled with the kind of polish that I think makes a truly great game.

I really need to give it another shot. I tried it some years back and really just couldn't get into it. Not sure why, it just didn't click with me. But I'm all about stuff that's like Zelda, so maybe it would be different now.

do you remember how long you tried it- It has been a while since i last played it but I do remember liking it more and more the further i delved into the game-

I def think it is one of the best

Awesome game! Why don t great games like Okami sell better? It would seem to me, "word of mouth" would count for more than it does with great games like Okami

I'm sure it's only one contributing factor, but the game was marketed abysmally. The commercials and gameplay don't make the game look interesting or enjoyable to play at all, and even if someone did get talked into playing it despite that, the first hour or so would probably be enough to dissuade them. It almost was for me. If there's one thing I will definitely criticize the game for, it's taking WAY too long to take the training wheels off and let the player roam freely.

I am a huge Okami fan and a huge LoZ fan. I think the issue is that you are comparing Okami to the faults of every 3D zelda game, which of course means you have a bigger list in the end. Anyway the only 3D Zelda that is better than Okami in my opinion is Majora's Mask.

Well, I certainly spent the greatest amount of time saying what I thought Okami did better than Zelda (which will usually be places Zelda screwed up that Okami didn't), but that seems kind of the first place to start for a thread arguing why one game is better than others. I think apart from the things I mentioned, the games are pretty equivalent. Both Okami and Zelda have enjoyable combat that I think leans a little too far in the direction of easy, both have some really memorable soundtracks, and both games have some really well designed basic control schemes. I mentioned at the bottom that I wish Okami was more like Zelda in terms of puzzle difficulty. Outside of that, not a lot comes to mind in terms of differences I could discuss that I feel like would be interesting/helpful to discuss.

I did not play it or know about it till the latter part of the Wii s lifespan-  I bought it on it being very  well reviewed and other positives i read about it- but i could see how someone not willing to be patient w it could "put it down" too soon -

You should have add "in my opinion" in your title.

It's like you're really asking for useless fight.

I mean, whether a game is or isn't better than another game is nothing but opinion. It should be pretty obvious that saying one thing is better than another is a subjective claim. Add that to the fact that the first paragraph is stating that everything is my opinion, and that you should feel free to disagree with it, and I think (I sincerely hope) I'll be all right.

Words cannot describe how much respect for you because you won't add "in my opinion" to your title.

It's redundant. If someone isn't smart enough to understand opinion from context alone, they aren't smart enough to understand the arguments you're presenting and needn't be catered to.

I think they're both bad xD but I played Okami for a little longer I guess before getting bored.

psss... so is Alundra

Almost.

Alundra is the best Zelda clone ever made. The only bad part about the game is the stupid puzzle sections which are too fucking hardcore.

Okami is boring as fuck.

"I've Underestimated the Horse Power from Mario Kart 8, I'll Never Doubt the WiiU's Engine Again"

No.

Okami is basically a Zelda without dungeons. I enjoyed it but not better than any Zelda. 2D or 3D.

Because its not.

Okami is a great alternative to Zelda. And while I do like its style more, it isnt vibrant enough for me to try it. I'm not sure why but some of the washed out look of it really bothers me XD if the game itself was brighter and felt more like a wood cut painting (like the devs were going for) then I'd probably try it out.

Try the Wii or PS3 HD version, then. Much more vibrant.

One of my favorite games of all time. Definitely stands shoulder to shoulder with the best Zelda games. My one gripe though is how Issun insists on holding your hand through like 2/3rds and dozens of hours of the game. I'm a big boy, Issun! Let me play the damn game!
