Forums - Gaming Discussion - Disney Infinity canceled, Disney stopping as video game publisher

This makes sense.

If you look at USA NPD sell-through, Disney Infinity sales were just falling off a cliff from iteration to iteration.

LTD sales of Disney Infinity 3.0 as of March 2016 NPD were 1.194 million, while the equivalent sales of Disney Infinity 2.0 as of March 2015 were 1.720 million. That's a decline of -31%. Toy sales were also falling off a cliff.

It was just a matter of time.

Skylanders is going to meet the same fate. The latest version of Skylanders has only sold 741.5K in the USA so far according to NPD figures, down -47% from last year's Skylanders.

Do you know how well Lego Dimensions has done?

From Digital Spy:

"Disney has confirmed that it will cease to self-publish console games, with toys-to-life series Infinity being among the casualties.

In its latest earnings report, the company revealed a $147 million loss in its second quarter.

That's compared to a Skylanders franchise valued at $3 billion and with a sixth core game coming out this autumn. Then there's LEGO Dimensions, which contributed to Warner's $3.2 billion revenue last November, and amiibo figures that g"

Nintendo should look to ink a deal for Marvel properties at least. If they are serious about regaining marketshare in the West, that couldn't hurt.

That is unlikely to happen. Diney wouldn't want to restrict their games to a tiny audience like the Nintendo fanbase. It would probably be multiplat or in case of Spiderman a PlayStation exclusive.

Sucker Punch would be the best dev to make a Marvel game.

It seems that family/kid friendly titles have declined massively this generation.

Disney Infinity is dead, Skylanders & Just Dance have had huge declines but might last another year or two. The return of Guitar Hero & Rock Band failed and probably arent getting new entries.

The only 3rd party kid/family titles that seem to be doing well are Minecraft & Lego titles.

Understandable.  if nothing else, the Dimensions line did "contribute" to the revenue which is certainly the opposite of a loss.  It's in the positive, but it's all I can find at the time.  Let me know if you happen to come across something more specific.

So does anyone else suspect that we will see star wars and marvel characters rocking up In lego dimensions this year?
The assets are already made and disney can just take the royalties.

I also agree that new levels packs doesn't have the impact of a new game. It will be interesting to see how wb handles it

I predict Fall 2017 for a new entire Dimensions game.  I think it's too late to announce anything substancial for this fall especially with Disney axing Infinity.  In theory, WB potentially has so much to work with now.  So to release a Dimensions 2 by this fall will leave them too little time to ensure a quality sequal.

Skylanders: Giants (2012-March 2013) - 53.0% of 2013's total TTL NPD sales

Skylanders: Swap Force (2013-March 2014) - 46.3% of 2013's total TTL NPD sales

Skylanders: Trap Team (2014-March 2015) - 37.2% of 2013's total TTL NPD sales

Skylanders: Superchargers (2015-March 2016) - 18.3% of 2013's total TTL NPD sales

Disney Infinity:
