I honestly think Microsoft are keeping quiet and biding their time till they can release a new console, and putting one out in 5 years (total, not from now) will put the PS4k in a really tough position. Will they drop the PS4k so soon to come out with their next console, or will they let Microsoft have a year head start into next gen (or even 2). releasing in 2018 is really kind of the best option for Microsoft.

I honestly think Sony will have no problem making up a MS head start, and in fact thriving with existing platform during that time.
PS just has much stronger global brand, and with PS4 they have regained parity with MS on MS' home turf.
PSVR (especially with PS4 + NEO combined) will further entrench it's platform base enough to fend off early challengers.
PS5 can easily have straight-forward/viable cross-gen games with NEO, which undercuts any 1st year platform lead of MS.

If NX will be running ports of games also offered on PS4/NEO, it will be 8th/ 8.5 gen just like NEO is.
...Otherwise one can't refer to "X gen game".
But since Nintendo hasn't really competed vs. hardcore consoles, it seems silly to treat them as core part of console gen definition,
as it would to compare Sony/MS console gens to PC rigs with Titans or whatever (or to lump handhelds into console gen's).

I honestly think Sony will have no problem making up a 1 year lead from MS.  PS3 surpassed X360 even with it's problems and $ handicap of Bluray.

You are right that PS is a much stronger global brand, but MS was stronger in the USA during last generation. Now with Japans sales going down if Microsoft can recapture the US market PS will still have an advantage in Europe but sales might be very close either way and this was also the case last generations.

Overal last gen both consoles had big problems. If there was no red ring of death, how would sales have been, if sony had a console that was easier to program for.. etc etc... overall I think Microsoft having 1 year head start and making up for past mistakes they could have a PS4 success of their own, they have done a lot of things right with the Xbox one, they are just unlucky Sony did a lot of things a little bit better, especially at the beginning

8.5 :)

This generation bullshit has to stop. People take too much value into it where it doens't even hold any value. It's Nintendo's 7th home console. Case closed. Revisions not counted.

If you're just going to put it into a category with other consoles than it'll have to be ps4/xbo so gen 8, as for the majority of it's lifetime those are the consoles it will be competing with.

But isolate Nintendo and it is a generation after the WiiU, You can't categorize consoles from multiple companies into shared generations when their release schedules have become so different.

Does it matter?

Its the 9th gen. They skipped the 8th ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

We know so litle about NX.. Its an imposible qustion.

What matter is.. Its a new gen from Nintendo.

BUT just for this OP..
There is alot of "roumors" that NX in fact will be the first upgradeble console.. So it could start out as "8,5" gen.. when PS5/Xtwo comes.. It can be 9 gen.. and 2-3 years after.. 9.5 gen.. We have to wait and see

Since I make lots of charts, I figured I'd approach this from a visual standpoint as well. I whipped up this chart and turned it into a timeline:

Based on the way that the other gens were defined in that graph, 9th gen should start right where 7th gen ends. That is, when 7th gen is no longer supported significantly.

MS have just announced that they're ceasing production of the 360. It is likely that Sony will discontinue the PS3 soon. And the Wii of course has been discontinued for a little while now. So as I see it, NX is going to come just as the 7th gen is finished. Which makes it 9th gen, by that reasoning.
