I honestly think Microsoft are keeping quiet and biding their time till they can release a new console, and putting one out in 5 years (total, not from now) will put the PS4k in a really tough position. Will they drop the PS4k so soon to come out with their next console, or will they let Microsoft have a year head start into next gen (or even 2). releasing in 2018 is really kind of the best option for Microsoft.

I honestly think Sony will have no problem making up a 1 year lead from MS.  PS3 surpassed X360 even with it's problems and $ handicap of Bluray.
PS just has much stronger global brand, and with PS4 they have regained parity with MS on MS' home turf.
PSVR (especially with PS4 NEO) will further entrench it's platform base enough to fend off early challengers.
PS5 can easily have straight-forward bw-compatability with NEO, which undercuts any 1st year platform lead MS might have achieved.

If NX will be running ports of games also offered on PS4/NEO, it will be 8th/ 8.5 gen just like NEO is.

You are right that PS is a much stronger global brand, but MS was stronger in the USA during last generation. Now with Japans sales going down if Microsoft can recapture the US market PS will still have an advantage in Europe but sales might be very close either way and this was also the case last generations.

Overal last gen both consoles had big problems. If there was no red ring of death, how would sales have been, if sony had a console that was easier to program for.. etc etc... overall I think Microsoft having 1 year head start and making up for past mistakes they could have a PS4 success of their own, they have done a lot of things right with the Xbox one, they are just unlucky Sony did a lot of things a little bit better, especially at the beginning
