Forums - Gaming - The NX: 8th Gen or 9th Gen?

See thread title. Explanations for vote preferred.

Eighth Generation 69 27.17%

Ninth Generation 185 72.83%

Total:254

It is 9th gen. The power of the competition has not bearing on generation placement.

9th gen, suck it haters.

If Nintendo NX is considered an 8th gen console, then we can say Nintendo has the strongest 8th gen console.

I was talking about about console gen as a whole.

@ the bolded part, it's simple. Wii is 7th gen and the wii u is 8th gen because it released after wii as a entirely different console. Devs supporting it with 3rd party games doesn't factor into this. What games from this gen get ported to the nx doesn't matter. The PS4 and PS3 have some the same games at the end of 7th gen but does that mean the PS4 is a 7th gen console? No. How does BC work with the xbox one? Is the xbox one 7th gen because it's BC with some of the xbox 360's games? No.

I think people like "console gens" to be convoluted as possible.

@ the bolded.
I already covered that in my post. I said that if 90%+ of a consoles games are from generation X, then it's a generation x console. Will 90% of PS4's games be 7th gen games at the end of the console generation? No, not even close. (Even if you want to define all cross generational games as 7th gen games, which is debatable depending on the game.)
As for BC, I covered that as well, when I said "new" games.

It's not as simple as a new console release = new collective generation. Because it is technically possible to release a new console and rejoin the current generation if you want to. Neo Geo did that for example, with both of their consoles belonging to the fourth generation. And Sony's intention with PS4 Neo is pretty clear. They could have redesigned the shell and slapped a 5 on it if they wanted to, but that's not their intention.

The PS4 Neo is a rumor at this point.

As of yesterday it's as close to confirmed as it could be, short of Sony publically announcing it themselves. Apparently Sony are now sharing the specifications with developers. And Digital Foundry, among some others, have independently established that it's real.

"First up, we should tackle the issue of how reliable the leak is and by extension, whether the proposed spec is real or not. Up until very recently, exposure to 'PlayStation 4K' throughout the development community was limited. We have been sitting on a number of details awaiting a second source before going to press, but events have overtaken us somewhat - Sony is now openly sharing this specification with developers and while Giant Bomb beat us to the punch, we have access to the same documentation. There is no doubt - this is real. This is the new, more powerful PlayStation 4. "

It's a rumor because the source is supposedly leaked documents from sony. Sony itself has not confirmed anything regarding a PS4k, PS4.5 or PS4 Neo. Gaming news will write articles about any rumor regardless of what the source is. They don't verify their sources. Some of you take every rumor to heart. What happened to those leaked NX controllers?

You are right but it is a rumour with a lot of facts that make sense, the timing of the release of the new AMD chip, sony discussing possiblities in the past and the fact there is a lot of dislike towards this but Sony hasn't made a statement about it. At the current point saying its not true would be a huge relief for many people. Seems like a easy win if there was no truth to these rumours.

To you, sure, you can have that opponion but I would just recommend everyone else to follow the Wiki, which states the facts:

in another word, this thread is meaningless...

In another recent thread someone asked if the PS4K/4.5/Neo should be classified as an 8th or 9th generation system, and obviously the general consensus is that it's still 8th generation (discuss it in that thread). But that reminded me of a related conundrum I've been pondering for a while now. The NX is supposedly a significant leap from the Wii U, at least as powerful as the PS4 according to many rumors, so for the sake of argument let's assume that's the case. At first glance that would seem sufficient to garner it the label of a 9th-gen system.

Generations aren't defined by power, they're defined by theoretical compatibility.

If a PS4.5 were released, and all PS4.5 titles also worked on PS4, just with lower resolution, etc, it would be the same generation. The New 3DS is pretty much the same generation as the 3DS because, with the exception of issues relating to power, any New 3DS title could run on a 3DS (to see this in practice, see Hyrule Warriors Legends).

Gamecube to Wii is a new generation because much of the underlying functionality of the Wii was altered, including input mechanisms, OS, etc.

This applies for individual cases, and not industry-wide considerations. For those, we basically look at release periods and select the generation that best matches the release period... but only if the system is a new generation for that series of systems.

So PS3, 360, and Wii all released around the same time. PS Vita and 3DS released around the same time. Even if the PS Vitwo, a truly new system, were released around the same time as the New 3DS, the New 3DS would remain part of the PSV/3DS generation, because it's not a new system, just a tweak of an existing system, while the PSV2 would be the start of a new generation.

NX will be 9th gen, because it will be a new generation following on from the Wii U, which was 8th gen, which followed on from the Wii, which was 7th gen, and followed on from the 6th gen Gamecube.

Note that there's no reason why Sony and MS can't simply not release a 9th gen system - they can jump straight to 10th gen, if they choose to stick with PS4/XBO for another 4+ years.
