Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo's Blue Ocean Strategy: A Breakdown of Why It's Working (editorial)

That part about being impatient for profit is true. Seriously, Nintendo's ass is in ice cream when it comes to money. Just to demonstrate, they could fund a disruptive and balls-to-the-wall specced console on just their last quarter profits alone. What was it... $1.2 billion? Imagine them sending $500 million to ATI and $500 million to IBM and asking them to make them something really special. And it's not like they are done sucking up all the profit and revenue this generation, either.

Alas Microsoft is my favorite article. Why? Just read it.

"You are for ever angry, all you care about is intelligence, but I repeat again that I would give away all this superstellar life, all the ranks and honours, simply to be transformed into the soul of a merchant's wife weighing eighteen stone and set candles at God's shrine."

That was a great article. I just finished reading the whole thing.

Even Nintendo's so-called "casual" games are actually very good. This is something most third parties should take note of. Nintendo has an ability to make games that anyone can enjoy. I don't know any gamer (casual or hardcore) who doesn't enjoy Mario Kart for example. With games like Super Mario Galaxy, Metriod Prime 3, Smash Bros., Zelda, and Fire Emblem, it should be obvious that Nintendo is focusing on more than just the casuals and non-gamers.

If it weren't for Nintendo's disruptive approach this generation, I really believe the industry would stagnate. While Microsoft and Sony fight over the hardcore niche, Nintendo aims for a more mainstream audience. Their success is a testament to their approach.

Anyway, thanks for posting this. I look forward to reading his upcoming articles.

Fantastic article. I hope many analysts, gaming journalists, and (especially) third-party developers read it.

A little bit off topic, but I think that it fits in, even if not directly covered in the article.

Gimmicks.

I think that the Wii remote is going to be more devasting that MS and Sony realize, not just for this generation of consoles, but the next even more so.

Think about it.  The Wii remote isn't always the main controller for all Wii games, but the Wii system has been set up to use it as such.  Why not for all games?  Because the hardcore gamers can't / won't use it for some games, and even Nintendo knows that.

But, the new gamers, either young (say 5-9), female, older adults are playing the games with the Wii remote.  And probably ONLY with the Wii Remote.

What does that imply?  For the next Nintendo generation console, those gamers will migrate on using a similar input.  But not the more standard controllers that MS or Sony will provide.  Of course, MS and Sony will come out with their own motion controller.  But what will be their mindset towards that?  It will be the 'gimmick' controller, the 'baby one' (as in new gamers) that the 'real gamers' (as in the current hardcore) won't want to use.  And I think MS and Sony will treat their motion controller as a gimmick.  So, if you want to use decent motion controller, you'll have to go with Nintendo again.

And the old standard that as a novice/young gamer, you start out on a Nintendo then 'graduate' to a hardcore machine, the PS4 or X720, might not work as well as it did in the past.  Because just like the hardcore ones prefer the controller style that they grew up with, as it became more and more complicated with buttons, the next generation gamer won't like that style, and never will.

Torturing the numbers.  Hear them scream.

Nice article

Disruption, not destruction. Destruction is the removal of something, disruption is the changing of something. Big difference.

Sky Render - Sanity is for the weak.

Insightful and Intelligent makes this a nice article, can't wait to see what kind of bridge will be announced at E3.

I am a PC gamer, and also have a NDS now, but without access to a Nintendo Wii until End of 2007.

Currently playing: Super Smash Brothers Brawl(Wii), Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer(DS), Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime (DS), WiiFit(Wii)

Games Recently Beaten: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King (Normal; Very Hard after the next DLCs become available)

That should be taught in a B-school.
WOW! I want to go back and read more of this stuff when I have time.

Also, I buy into the "sour grapes" theory -- directly or indirectly. The people making the decisions are stuck in the old paradigm, so they can't see the value in the disruption.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.
