Forums - Nintendo - XCX saw a lot more censorship than you think

People complaining about censorship are the same people complaining about lack of updates on their torrent downloaded PC games.

Japan has big problem with exploitation of women and children. Just because it's anime child porn doesn't make child porn acceptable. Since, they wanted a teen rating there are standard that must be maintained.

I really feel like censorship is not the right term here.

Censorship implies that a government entity is mandating that this media conform to certain guidelines in order to be released in it's territory. As we know, this is not the case at all with XCX. I suppose self-censorship could be an appropriate term, but please, we really need to stop calling these changes 'censorship.'

I agree.

@OP

It is obvious why Nintendo does this. Different markets have different cultural levels of acceptance. I don't really care about this to be honest.

If this stops you from buying the game you need to seek professional help.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

I like having the choice of censorship. I would rather be able to remove the ridiculous outfits myself then have the devs do it. I hope other devs don't waste their time and resources on censorship.

You have the choice to learn Japanese.

Also the choice to buy another console because Nintendo doesn't believe in region free software.

Well seeing as how it is the English version I would rather have the choice of Japanese and English rather then just English.

It's not the english version. It's the whatever country you're from version. If you want features from the japanese version, learn japanese and buy the japanese version.

*localization

It's still censorship.
Localization is a broad term. It ranges from anything between re-mapping of hotkeys (In Japan = O, In the West = X), translating language, font change, lip-synching, packaging, age rating, legal rights, liscensing, promotion, etc. So just saying localization doesn't specify which part of it you're refering to.
In this particular instance, we're talking about the censorship.

And it's not only censosip if it is imposed on someone through a third party, as I believe you mentioned in a previous topic.

"
Censorship is the suppression of speech, public communication or other information which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, politically incorrect or inconvenient as determined by governments, media outlets, authorities or other groups or institutions. Governments, private organizations and individuals may engage in censorship. When an individual such as an author or other creator engages in censorship of their own works or speech, it is called self-censorship."

In this case it's called self censorship. I censor myself every day. And it doesn't make people who dislike this kind of practice any less upset hearing that this wasn't imposed on the developer by a third party/government. In fact, this is the type of censorship that gets the most flack from the fans, because the developer can't blame anyone else for this. Things that commonly appear in Teen rated games from other developers are often removed by Nintendo as of late. This is about their image and perception of their western audience rather than an act of neccesity. And that's what many people don't like.

Though in my personal opinion, I can understand why they would be weary with how they portray Lyn at last, since she is 13 in all versions of the game, and the age of concent is different in Japan.

It's not self censorship. It's localization. They are making edits to a game specifically with the intention of making it more enjoyable for a western audience. Just because the changes makes you upset doesn't make it censorship.

Localization is indeed a broad term. That doesn't mean that self censorship a correct catagorization of what you're referring to. It's not.

So its mainly the creepy one then? I don't really care about her tbh for obvious reasons.

The boob slider is something that I wish they kept but hey! Its nothing the lovely upcoming emulator can't fix!

Doesn't need to be different versions. As I said I prefer to have the choice of both on the same disc. It may be idealistic, but it doesn't change what I would prefer. Just as I prefer the choice of censorship or not.
