Forums - Gaming - Will Gen 8 Be Remembered as the Worst Ever?

Alright, lets be real for a second. We all know the general gist of the 8th generation by now. Games have been releasing with watered-down content and features since 2013. Most of the games we get nowadays are sequels, rehashed and repainted doubles from the last game in the series. any new IP's we get seem bland and boring with very few exceptions. and the one thing everyone talks about is resolution. You either get 1080p at 30 fps or 720p at 60 fps, and if you have a beefy PC, good for you, but you are still just a minority and dont reflect most of gaming culture.

But looking away from that, in more ways than anyone could imagine, gaming diminishes more every day. It seems like every month now, we get more bad news. Games are being delayed, some completely cancelled, hell even entire companies shut down or at least get divided up. Hacker groups are always trying to shut down servers for online games. The PS Vita was discontinued last year and sony has pulled out of handheld gaming. Gaming has become more expensive with some AAA titles charging over $100 for the full experience. Some major companies that people have trusted for years have even been making shady business moves. Microsoft is seeming to be merging Xbox with PC, Sony tried to trademark the term "lets play", and Nintendo.... alright, nintendo never really does anything wrong, but theres definitely stuff they dont get right. and others have just gone over to mobile platforms to make easy cash.

However, through all the darkness and dispair, there is one upside-- the rise of indie games. Sure, they have been around for who-knows-how-long, but they have really been making a mark in Gen 8. Shovel Knight, FNAF, Minecraft, Undertale, and No Man's Sky, seem to be doing the job of being fun better than anything. Im even thinking about getting Stardew Valley since it looks so much like the old Harvest Moon games before they lost their touch.

And while indie games are fun and im not knocking them, think about it-- small independant dev teams are probably the best thing we have right now while huge AAA companies are heading south. and with the NX and PS4K (now confimed) on the horizon, could gen 8 be considered the worst ever?

Worst than gen 3? No.

Yes you read my mind OP. I too think this gen is a supreme disappointment.

We have the failing Wii U
Early-access games, games with meager launch content such as Battlefront and Hitman
PSplus becoming a really bad deal, no AAA games
Very few new IPs

The Atari generation almost kills console gaming. It won't be remembered as worse than that.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

I'm enjoying this gen alot, lots of quality games to play. I don't even have time to play everything I'd want 😋

Naw I love the 8th gen.

Nah, 8th gen's gonna be pretty well remembered in a few years. Some good stuff coming out recently. Right now, Gens 1 and 2 are probably the worst remembered, as they were complete messes, with no cohesiveness whatsoever.

I'm more worried about 9th gen, tbh. There's no obvious direction for the industry to go in, so anything could really happen. And next gen could possibly be the generation that destroys whatever respect as a console competitor Nintendo has, or saves them. Let's wait and see.

bet: lost

The problems of modern gaming are almost none of those you listed. The problem is that the philosophy of game design has changed to please the mass market. Games are constantly being dumbed down and play like interactive movies and hand-hold the player, because developers decided that everybody must be able to enjoy every single game that is made. And we have gaming journalists so incompetent that they seldom report this, if they're even aware of it.

The one factor to save the situation somewhat is indie gaming, thanks to their independence like you say.

You crazy... The NES is the best console ever made.

I'm gonna say PS2 > PS4 tied with PS1 > PS3. SNES is prob my fav console... after which every Nintendo console was shit imo.
