These are separate companies. They're not responsible for each others' release schedules. I think this "gen" stuff is a silly and outdated concept that should go away. If Nintendo wants to release a new system every 4-5 years, they have every right to do so. If Sony wants to release a system every 8 years while releasing smaller "upgrades" in between, they have every right to do so. You can't expect Nintendo to hold back from releasing their new system just because Sony and Microsoft aren't ready to release theirs yet. Who the hell ever said every company has to release their consoles at the same time?

RIGHT!
Pocky Lover Boy!

If it runs current generation games (FIFA 16 / Final Fantasy XV) then it's a current generation console. Specification doesn't matter. Nor release date.
Everything is supposed to be new in the NX
The only thing is that it will be released 1 year earlier that it was supposed to be. That does not make it a "half gen" upgrade.
It's a new system. Period.

Denouncing the generation level of a Nintendo console is a way for the haters to say something negative about Nintendo. Any way to make Nintendo seem inferior and their own allegiances superior. |
My biggest fear is that the NX launch conversation willl be reduced to PSVR vs NX.
Pitting a new system against an accessory, that's pretty deminishing for the NX.
Well that depends on what you consider next gen. If you mean by pure power, yes and no. It will certainly be much stronger than the WiiU, but not much stronger (if at all) than the PS4. So in terms of Nintendo consoles, it is a new gen in this respect. However if you compare it to the others, some might incorrectly lable it as "mid gen".
What makes it next gen though is going to be the innovation and gameplay elements behind it. This fact alone puts it in its own next gen category and there is no denying that. For example the PS4.5 rumors going around state that it will be mainly PS4 games running at a higher resolution or FPS for those who want the boost (similar to PS4 vs PS3 early in the gen). However, while some titles will likely be cross gen like Zelda U/NX, for the most part it seems Nintendo is ready to leave the WiiU behind and move forward with new ideas and features. This rules out a mid gen title altogether in my opinion.
So in short, yes NX will be the next gen of Nintendo.

I actually do not expect much of that unless the NX has some form of VR itself. Especially given that there could be a whole year apart in launch. |
So you're one of those guys who thinks the NX will not come out in 2016?
Well you're in for a surprise. It will come out in 2016. And people will compare it to the PSVR, especially mainstream media, because both will be the "hot new gaming thing of the end of 2016"
