Forums - Gaming - So is the NX a new generation of console from Nintendo or a half gen upgrade?

With recent news of PS4.5 and Xbox One upgrade, how should we consider the NX? Wii U will be 4 years old if NX decides to release on 2016 and the PS4 and One will be four years old Holiday 2017 if PS4.5 and Xbox 1.5 releases then. So is the NX more similar to the half gen upgrade like the PS4.5 and Xbox One, or has the Wii U lasted long enough like the original Xbox (also existed for 4 years before 360 released) that the NX should classify as a new console generation from Nintendo?

I'm sure the NX will be a whole new concept (with the Fusion or Cross thing), so I don't think it can be called an upgrade. With that said, if the PS4 and the XBone are getting upgrades too, the NX might just be at the same power difference the WiiU was.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Its not about duration is it? I thought it was about performance.
If the NX is on PS4 level, thats a big jump up in terms of performance from the Wii U.
Id say that its a new gen then.

Welcome to the same gen in terms of performance, as the others nintendo.

If Wii U, while beeing in the range of power of a 360/PS3 was considered Gen 8 then NX, even if it's an upgrade (which I think it isn't) has to be considered Gen 9. Keep in mind that Wii U is at the end of it's 4 years lifecycle by the end of this year while PS4/X1 have been around for almost 3 years...

I usually go by each console being a new generation, unless it's an updated version in the style of DS and 3DS modifications. Not new consoles, but updated models and minor upgrades.

So unless it's an updated Wii U, I'd consider it Nintent's next gen console.

Supposedly from Eurogamer, the PS4.5 wont be too mich different than the PS4 to allow games to run on both. If anything the difference in power of NX, if it reaches Xbox One power, will be the difference between Xbox One and PS4.5.

I mean it's technically a new gen, but really it'll be the first (and last) console that destroys the concept of generations entirely.

If it use new wave of games.. its offcourse "new generation from Nintendo"

And we will have to wait and see what NX is/does/can.. Nintendo them self talks about a hole new type of console.. and we have also seen the patents.. that makes talk about gen 8 or 9 prette stupid.. (upgradeble consoles.. and true power of the cloud).

I have to seriously question your intelligence and sanity for asking such a question.

The NX is going to have a different name, different controller, different operating system and different games.

Lol, I guess you can call me as sane as the general market who was and still could be thinking that the WiiU and 3DS are part of the Wii and DS hardware revision.

New gen, Wii U is on its deathbed and not a moment too soon.
