This is what SCE Vice President said back in 2015:

As there was a hand of favorite game title, no longer need to re-buy for every model change of the game machine, can continue to move even a hand-held game in the future of the gaming machine in the long span.
When the out performance enhanced version of "PS4.1" specific machine, what was 30fps in the current PS4 might be able to play at 60fps. In terms of "PS4.1" specific machine has been enhanced performance, it might be to be able to play in 4K native if corresponding to the HDMI 2.0. Also, if in response to the HDMI 2.0a, that the patch that is provided, it may be able to play the hand game with HDR enabled. Without re-buy the remake, such as HD Remastered at full price, in the "PS4.x corresponding patch" is provided at a low cost, path is provided, such as can be upgraded to the evolution version of the better image representation It might be so.

Selling patches is something I've been considering for a long time.

That sounds interesting, do you have any link I could check the full statements? I'd be curious to see the full context

thanks, much appreciated :)

Don't see the point of this. Hardly anyone has 4k TVs, there is only one 4K/Ultra HD channel in the UK right now as far as I know.

I normally end up buying, two Playstation home consoles each generation anyway, but even so I'm not keen on the idea of this at all.

I've taken you back a few years in my edit ...

If this and XboxToo are real + nx controller is real, we're less than 3 months away from the worse E3 in the history of E3

What resolutions between 1080p and 4k can they use?

At this point I think it'd be a given that they'd use some sort of build in 4k upscaler

My guess would be 1080p/60fps across the board with 4K upscaling. That to me seems the perfect compromise.

So what are we talking here.... twice the power of the PS4? and the ability to upscale things.

How much would such a unit cost? I dont know... I rather just have a cheap slim version of the PS4.

But I guess options is okay, those with more to spend, can go for the more expensive version that can upscale games.

But 1080p TVs started gaining momentum a couple of years before the last gen, I remember the first HDTV in my house was in 2004, comfortably before gen 7 started.

Unless Sony is planning a longer than expected generation then I still don't see why they need to bother with 4K right now.

Most games already run at 1080p/30fps, some even run at 1080p/60fps. All the updated PS4 would do is allow for 1080p/60fps across the board so it won't have to be anywhere near twice the power. They're calling it a PS4.5 for a reason. I think it could actually work and if marketed correctly wouldn't upset too many people.
