The XB360 had the red ring of death that would brick the console and that didn't slow down the sales. Instead of decreasing sales, people would go out and buy multiple XB360 consoles with the ever increasing model versions:
XB360 Core; XB360 Pro; XB360 Arcade; XB360 Elite; XB360 S; XB360 E

So I highly doubt the sales of the PS4, which has no major hardware issues, would slow down with a new PS4.5 version.

I don't think its about 4k so much. 4k as a thing isn't that huge. I think this is a reaction to either of two things, one is the existing PS4 is just too rubbish for VR or Sony has found out some key information about NX and is worried their product is not competitive.

To be perfectly honest if the VR headset needs a PS4.5 I'm happy with that. I'll sell my existing ps4 and upgrade to PS4.5 because I'm into VR in a big way.

I'd rather they made the VR headset PS4.5 only than rubbish and also PS4 compatible. It seems like they may throw a few VR scraps to the existing PS4 userbase but it really needs the PS4.5 for the full experience.

Maybe the new PS4 will actually be the PS4 VR console able to run all existing ps4 games as well as VR and 4k games. I'm happy with that.

Maybe the VR headset will also launch with a ps4 exchange program?

If this is a response to Nintendo NX then perhaps we ought to get more excited and finally Nintendo are back into releasing hardware with competitive specs and not last generation performance at inflated prices.

I personally don't think they should enhance 1080p games on ps4.5 I think they should be identical for both consoles that way people with existing ps4's who aren't into VR aren't missing out at all and this will still make the standard ps4 a good choice for those without VR or 4k.

Lets not forget that if the ps4 wasn't upgraded for VR then developers would be constantly fighting the hardware trying to achieve good performance on the standard ps4. To get smooth response and a high refresh rate the games may not even have met 360/ps3 quality visuals we could have been looking at something on original xbox/ps2 quality for the best experience or ps3/xbox 360 level with compromises to quality/performance. At least this way hopefully we will get a far superior experience to get much closer to the high end pc experience.

I don't think it will fragment the userbase as long as sony clearly seperate the vr/4k experience to the ps4.5 and both ps4's get the same standard 1080p game experience without enhancing on ps4.5.

What a load of FUD!
There is not a single chance Sony is going to require a ps4.5 for VR.

PS3 already had several good looking games, that still look great, running at 1080p60! PS3 visuals are more than enough for the current VR headsets and is no trouble at all for the ps4. VR is much more immersive and intense, you're better off with less distracting effects. You don't need as much detail on VR as on a 1080p screen.

The NX is not going to much more powerful than ps4 and XBox One. Nintendo doesn't do $600 consoles or sell at a big loss. And even if it was twice as powerful as the ps4 is now, that difference won't be used by 3rd parties. And you still can't play Sony games on it!

An an exchange program? Maybe if you were renting the console for $40 a month, otherwise not a chance in hell.

Well its no surprise I don't agree with you at all.  My point abou the ps4.5 was you get the full fat VR experience and the standard ps4 only got sent scraps not that there was nothing at all with regards VR on ps4 so don't change my points to suit your argument.

Don't forget the ps3 actually has more cpu performance than ps4. The ps4 is way more powerful graphically and has a huge amount of extra memory but the ps3 does have a huge amount of cpu performance in the cell. The reason I raise that point is the cpu requirements of VR are higher than normal 2D graphics especially if you want to be driving very high frame rates with none laggy response. Neither the ps4 or xbone are powerful with regard cpu performance. If the NX is using AMD's new CPU architecture it may be significantly more powerful in CPU performance over ps4 and xbone even if in gpu terms it isn't.

The exchange program could be something like £150 off the price of the launch ps4.5 in exchange for your ps4 and of course the launch price will be initially high for the first few months. Hardly a stretch.

We shall see what happens but its getting exciting if your a fan like me of VR.

Some people still miss the point. This new PS4 would simply be the PS4 on store shelves, it is not going to affect their experience with their day one PS4 at all. It is only going to be a better machine, that is more worthy of purchase in 2017.

If you are mad because things eveolve then you should probably not be a consumer. Change is the norm, you by a 2016 car, then 2 years later in the same body style they have a better motor, better transmission, and a dozen new creature comfort features. No one says its BS and they should have waited for a new body style to add the new motor, tranny, and creature comforts. The same thing happens with phones, TVs, tooth brushes, Stoves, and everything else.

By moving to a model where the console stays fresh over the 10 years it is on the market, they are making the consoles a much better purchase and investment.

What about the ps4 only getting sent scraps, does not require upgrading to ps4.5 to get the full experience?
Do you really think Sony would launch a $399 / $499 headset and then say, oh btw, beyond some basic mini games, you'll also need a new ps4!

My Pentium 90 mhz back in the day was handling 90fps just fine, and in stereographic 3D too. And now 6 x 1800 mhz cores can't handle 90 fps lol. It's all about balancing the software. VR needs a lot less polygons as you're effectively only getting the equivalent of 480p in terms of detail.

The only exchange program you'll get is from trading the console in at a store or selling it on ebay. Sony is not going to go into the refurbishing business themselves.

I'm excited about VR too, would even buy the bundle if that's the only way to get it here. (already have camera and move, can sell them)
I'm excited about the prospect of a slim model, either X1 or PS4 with 4K UHD blu-ray player as well.
Yet hardware upgrades no way. That's the worst way to introduce a new peripheral.

Don't believe all the doom and gloom from the PC side, the current ps4 can easily handle the requirements. And its biggest advantage is a fixed hardware spec to make it possible.

Wrong, people would not be mad about a Playstation 5, just about PS4.5, and with cars you can buy a Model from 1886 with Horses and you would still be able to go anywhere you want, with a New Console, is like you being unable to drive throught certain street of your own city.

Well no actually :p

But I get your point if ps4.5 would block out certain VR games.
At this point that would be like Occulus saying in December, oh sorry, the new requirements are this month's released gpu. It won't play on what we said before, gottto keep up with the times. It would be highly entertaining to watch what happens if Sony pulls such a stunt.
