Console generations are basically going to end. I've said it many times before. MS is already pursuing this and so is Sony, Nintendo also has patents for upgradable consoles.

The business is changing, you guys will need to get used to it.

I agree for the most part. The only fork in the road is Nintendo. True, Nintendo might have patents for upgradable consoles and I would welcome it. But they are still dead set on making new experiences which more than likely require new hardware components.

Most of Nintendo's innovations can be be boiled down to peripherals which they done a pretty good job of selling during the Wii era (Balance Board, Wii Motion plus). Both outsold the Wii U :p

Yeah! I was going to mention peripherals but I forgot to mention that! In this case, Nintendo could make prebuilt upgradeable consoles too. The pperipherals could easily connect to newer builds. This is sounding much better to me now. I really don't want the future to be full of PS12 and Xbox Elevens. Coming up with a universal name that's upgradable is the future of gaming consoles imo. I'd much rather have a console named the Playstation for the rest of my life, as long as it evolves with the times. Or just being able to say, "Let's Play NIntendo" again. Not, "Let's Play Nintendo Wii XYZABC U".

Makes sense. Nintendo must really be scaring Sony and MS. MS was rumored to be doing this soon too, correct? Just think if Nintendo again releases a console (NX) that matches or surpasses the PS4 and XB1 and then a year later we get new consoles from them that blows it out of the water? Nintendo would be in the same situation they are in now. It could really damage them badly.

Nintendo have patent that does this also.. (and talking about a hole new take at consoles) so chill until you know any.. :)

imo.. if the current ps4 cant be upgraded.. It will for sure hurt sony.. how much I dont know.. but it would be a slap in the face to existing ps4 owners..

So no one knows whether its likely possible to upgrade the PS4's performance externally through an add on?

maybe they are making a PS4 version that has the additional VR hardware built in.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

This would be very foolish. I've never liked a system splitting its own market like "New 3DS" did.

Also, I don't see 4K becoming a reality until next generation or roughly 2020 given technical demands such a leap would take.

It has a USB 3.0 ports ... but I don't think those are fast enough to accomodate a massive hardware upgrade.

Basically I guess what they could do is essentially have the new games run off the new chip mostly with maybe background tasks assigned to the "original PS4" that don't require high bandwidth.

They could upgrade it to a degree via USB 3.0 but not enough to run at 4K for sure.

Do not see any reason they could not do something similar to this. But I do not think USB 3.0 is fast enough to do a "real" upgrade

i highly doubt it will be an add-on.

it will be like the iphone 6 and iphone 6S. it will be forward/backward compatible to a certain extent. it is the same thing ms is doing.

not sure how i feel about it.
