Microsoft is the freaking reason Diablo 3's console player base was fractured. I'm 95% sure they are the sole reason that there isn't PC->PS4 cross play ... as not to spite MS.

Hmmm... uhmmm... no.

The PC version of Diablo 3 differs too much from the console version. If anything, there could have been cross play between PS3 and PS4, but it didn't happen.

I wonder if they will do cross-platform with their older consoles? Diablo 3 for example could be patched to support it.

Halo the Master Chief Collection is in dire need of a boost in players, cross platform with the 360 games+player base perhaps?

Of all examples, you picked the worst....

Diablo 3 could NOT support cross generation play. The ps3/360 physically are unable to fully run the game. The cube of Kanai would probably melt the old consoles....

Hmm? You will need to expand and elaborate on that point.

As far as I know, the games are almost identical, just the Xbox 360 version is no longer patched or supported, the Xbox One version is and is closer to the PC version, including all the new content.
Technically, nothing is stopping Blizzard from updating Diablo 3 on the 360 to bring it up to par to the newer releases with effects toned down, this is Diablo 3 remember, it could run on a freaking toaster.
Granted you have higher enemy densities etc' on the Xbox One version, but it's not difficult for the game to "lighten things up" so that the Xbox One version can revert to a Xbox 360 "mode" for multiplayer when playing with 360 users.
It's the same game, same network, just different hardware.

If i were Sony, i would've just said, no thanks MS.

Sony needed to do this to cut the probable false narrative off at the knees.

Xbox 360 CANNOT handle RoS without hacking the game. For example, rifts on PS3/360 only have mobs from the same act instead of game game wide.  The PS4/XB1 generate rifts based on data from the entire game.

PS3/360 have so little ram that every 7 loaded areas, all ones before it are reset as if never touched.

PS3/360 do not force an install -- its completely optional. This means that game patches cannot alter core game content in large amounts without breaking the game. PS4/XB1/PC all alter existing game files in place meaning the system thinks its the original game instead of overlaying it.

PS3/360 have lower mob densities due to the lower specs and the inability to properly calculate the math on that many objects on screen.

Add in the the Cube of Kanai with the extra calculations/ extra effects and you would melt the old consoles. Even if they were able to properly be patched (which they aren't), it would change the whole game mechanics (by stfor the people playing on the modern consoles.

Seriously though - you CANNOT properly patch a blizzard game in the ways they patch things (not just plugin DLC like borderlands) on the PS3/360.

Not really. Values for skills, items, etc are all the same. Damage calculations are the same, density is the same.

The only differences are:
1.) The GUI
2.) Skill Targeting
3.) Dodge Roll (which does nothing and could just be removed)
4.) No Seasons
5.) Trading isn't limited
6.) Offline play

They ported all the console enhancements back over to PC (except trading if you call that an enhancement). They could easily meld the two to be exactly the same, including online character storage like closed bnet on Diablo 2 (to kill cheating).

Cross generation play is IMPOSSIBLE. Read my reply above.

As far as I'm aware, Sony has always wanted to play cross play with Xbox but mircrosoft as always been against the idea. Sonolaystation has just done cross play with PC gamers instead. I wonder why Xbox is having the sudden change of mind?
Nethertheless this is good news and will be good fun to play competitive games with Xbox and PS players along with PC aswell.

Phil has been promising cross play for a while now and if there was another game like FFXIV ARR that required a console maker to allow crossplay in order to get a port, it would have been a lot of negative PR if ms didn't get a port.

Looking forward to this new vision. Good to see MS pushing it further.

You mean, catching up, right?

And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

Yeah... again PC and console Diablo 3 differs too much for cross play.

You didnt give a good reason why PS3 and PS4 cant offer cross play. Also, last gen plays Diablo 3 fine. It was designed for low end specs.
