If developers go down this road and Sony doesn't play along, Xbox gamers will still benefit, the PC is a platform that can even the playing field for Microsoft, makes sense to leverage it as much as possible.

This is a perfect post in light of the discussion above.
The PS5 Exists.

cross platform is great for gamers because it increases player counts. it is especially good for games like PvZ that have low counts to begin with.
but clearly ms isn't doing this because they are good guys. xbox is in danger of being unviable. if xbox would be leading the market this would have never happened.
but whatever. i don't care. cross platform play is a good thing even it is being done for all the wrong reasons. it will still be a game by game decision so i don't expect it to be a huge thing especially right off the bat but it is a positive step in the right direction.

Exactly.
Also, it gives more longevitity to the multiplayer aspect of games and also would incentivate a healthy competition among the user bases.
Can you imagine on the next Call of Duty:
Team Playstation vs Team PC

That would make the "Console War" so fucking hilarious LOL

But Sony has been playing along for 12 years, why would Sony change there tune now just because MS has finally realised PC players exist.
I feel like Microsoft's attempt to create buzz and hype behind this idea is somewhat working. I don't know how Sony will respond to this, and I honestly don't know about the netcode implication and issues that will arise from it. They are behind now, and any idea can be good to pull them out of the ditch. However, will people still see the PS4 as the go-to console? Which consoles they'll buy ultimately? They do need more ideas, but I don't think they got a viable one yet.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Sony was thinking about this exact idea several years ago while the Xbox 360 dominated the market?
Looks like MS have learnt from Apple. Do something your competitors have been doing for years and let the media believe it's the latest and greatest discovery.
This is ass backwards. Sony and many devs have been trying for years to get MS to budge on cross play. This is not a jab to sony. *Shakes head. This is MS finally caving in.
