Forums - Gaming - [PC Gamer] Why PC games should never become universal 'apps' (Or the problems with Microsoft UWP/UWAs

Imagine if the next Windows they dont allow you to run win32/64 .exe files ?
Everything you can get for windows is from the store, and in app form.

TBH, if people could buy games on Windows 10 and receive a console version for free, a lot of people would like to use the Windows Store. I bet even the reverse is true to an extent. But yeah, Microsoft has a lot of work to do if they want to succeed, and they're definitely not off to a good start.

Why would people use the windows store to get a free console version? It would be likely be digitally attached to your account so you couldnt' sale or trade it.

If PC people are already going to be buying a game, they're probably going to be buying it digitally. So why not buy it from the store that gives you the console version for free when you buy the game there? A lot of PC gamers also own consoles so it makes sense.

Keep in mind that MS never stated once that GFWL was ever going to be permanently gone, this is more or less a result of their desire to bring it back, just in a slightly different form.

Yeah, they just needed some time to think of a way to make it much worse.

I think that if this gets bashed again and they either sort it out or grit their teeth will just have us waiting another 5-8 years before they try it again. They say 3rd times the charm but I honestly wouldn't want to give them a 3rd chance at this point. Any mega corp would desire a walled restricted garden where they can control the state of an industry and keep siphoning from peoples pockets than to let everything and everyone walk in and our of their door while supporting them hand over foot, this is how mega corps usually operate anyway, can't say I;ve seen one that openly cares for absolutely everyone, including their competition to a point where they don't strive to be #1 at all times while rpeventing anyone from taking said spot.

I Just hope this doesn't end up leading to Microsoft making 3rd party deals with publishers to release their games "Windows 10 and Windows Store" exclusive. Would end up forcing Valve and GoG to start doing their own deals making a complete seperation and fragmentation. I also feel that GoG wouldn't survive in such an environment... Praise Gaben that Valve has actually been quite open and havent done anything like that, despite clearly being able.

I don't know allot about some of the stuff Durante talks about in this article to have my own opinion on some of the things Microsoft is doing, but I'll beleive what he says over anyone else. Especially over Microsoft.

If I rememebr right, Phil was asked at one point about GFWL and his reaction was that people were not ready for it... Yet.

I doubt MSoft will pay for Win10 & Win Store exclusives, unless they are also XboxOne exclusives too. Their current PC market is too small to make evena a small part of the money back.

At least, that's what I hope!

Also, Tim Sweeney has done another article about UWP and how to make it open

Forcing Valve and GoG to make the same type of deals would be such an irksome tactic from MS if that turned out to be the case, though in the end it would get me rooting more for the other two since MS would have been the one to spark off such a tactic if they did so.

I'm honestly not with Windows 10 or the MS store in general, MS has always had this thing where they simply outright avoid supporting for mods with their games let alone the community and Valve heavily support that aspect of PC gaming and the community in general. I'm far more likely to hop onto Steam OS and see Vulkan support grow than what MS has in store because as far as I can see all they have in store is what they have, not what they have for everyone the way Vulkan and other clients/vendors will have.

Great article, confirms all my suspicions.
How to keep Windows open? Don't buy from the win 10 store.
Or stick with Windows 7 or 8.1 then you don't even get tempted.

I can see them doing a kick-start with a few titles money hatted into exclusivity for the sake of "developing" their walled garden and taking a loss. Unlike the Xbox division's limited backing, bigger Microsoft is making enourmous investments into getting people into their store and Windows 10 environment for possible future growth potential. Thats why I beleive its a possibility they won't care about Steam or the sales until after the endevour fails, if it fails they simply cut their losses and exit. Then we have dead games for years again like GFWL. Dark Souls on steam has been wonderfull.

As for Vulkan, we can only hope that the expected uptake of it is as massive as it will need. DirectX has just been one big problem for a long time IMO. Being replaced with something open would be amazing. It's not going to be easy for vulkan to take over. Directx for gamers is embeded throughout sadly, hope it has some form of old directx emulation. Would make me switch to Steam OS as well if I didnt have to sacrifice so many games.
