If X1 was selling like Wii U, I'd entertain the notion Xbox is probably dead.

People were saying this about Nintendo during the Wii era...

From my memory, people mocked Wii because it did a poor job at moving core software and it was technically inferior.

People feel X1 is dead because its selling less than PS4 and MS is putting games on Windows 10. Not really the same thing.

Mhmmm.... the disparity isn't as signficant though.

For example, the best CoD ever did on Wii was about 2.2 million. While BO3 is at 6.6 million and growing.

I'm sure you knew this already though.

Mario Kart Wii did 35million on the Wii. How much did Forza or Gran Turismo do?

Technically, Atai and Sega are still in the gaming industry too...

I don't expect Xbox to just disappear, but I think there will definitely be some changes. We may not see them in the console industry in quite the same way they were the last two generations. I believe the same is happening to Nintedo, going more mobile and all.

Honestly, I see the death of consoles, to some extent. No need for physical hardware, when almost everything turns software based. Controllers, and other peripherals, and BRAND are what will matter most. I think Sony will just hold out the longest, at this pace. Or perhaps, there will ALWAYS be a place for a consoles?

It'll be interesting to see how the next few years play out, for sure.

There's always a place for consoles for me. I can't get in either PC or mobile gaming.

I don't know about that. The fact that they are staying in gaming and aiming for a more stable venue does mean they are prone to "killing" the Xbox console and getting out of the console market. It quite honestly has a worse image in "out of the US" markets than windows. So, i don't see what they gain from keeping it.

Take it easy everyone. That is all I'm going to say.

Actually, in terms of stock health, if you make 200 billion in revenue (sales to distributors) but it costs you 199,999,999,999 (only a dollar profit). Your company will not be worth very much.

See, in terms of wall street, corporate health is calculated as profit divided by revenue. The better your profit margins (difference between sales and cost) the better your company will do.

In the market, a company that sells 10m consoles and only makes a dollar on each is worth less than a company that only sells 1,000 consoles, but makes 1k on each.

to be completely clear, even if ms made the exact same amount of money with a "steam box" even if it sold less, if they make a higher profit margin, their stock will go up, which means their value goes up.

This is not wrong but definitely I oversimplified and not a financial investor stand point but more of an economic analyst one... Which often diverge in conclusion... For a find investor long term equity, brand equity, all sorts of various assets, sometimes dividend, potential branching etc are really big factors at play.. Cold hard revenue vs profit balance is way to generic in finance..

to all, I also strong believe PC gaming is not a solution, the PC industry has been under heavy fire left and right for a while now, I also believe console gaming as we know it is going the same direction... And I strongly feel like MS for once is anticipating this and Sony is betting on their mage to last longer but will fall behind eventually... The key question here is what will control our living rooms in the future and more precisely what will be our Mai entertainment go to devices.. Cloud computing, Onecore win10, continuum are all solution that enables MS to be ultra versatile across devices and will help them adapt on the go... XBox will be their entertainment output for the mass market whatever this will be and probably a cross all devices they can be on...

Obviously there are many more factors to think about, but at the end of the day, MS would rather have a box with a higher profit margin, than one with less. And that reflects in financial health.

Besides, it's not like I'm saying that ms are going to just abandon the console. I'm saying they are very likely to change their approach, and make a more profit margin driven box. They'll keep making xbo, release a digital only box, and aim to make that the main console. As the market shifts over, they will begin to phase out the original. But obviously, they aren't just going to stop selling xboxes. Anyone who thinks that is my point is likely just being very reactionary; ie hurt

You can expect lots of doom and gloom particularly on this website. Sony domination is boring lol.

As long as MS keep the games as a xbox/windows cross game release and let the xbox as it is, a gaming console, then MS will be fine. Don't see nothing wrong about that since I believe most console gamers don't play on PC anyway. If MS intention is to transform xbox slowly but steady into a PC platform similar to steam box, then I don't see a bright future for it. What I mean about a bright future, I mean becoming mainstream. It can still be profitable as a steam box like service but that's it.
