How many have they destroyed so far to earn that title?

Digital Anvil. >:( (Freelancer.)
Fasa Studio's. (Mechwarrior.)
Ensemble. (Age of Empires.)
And now Lionhead. All amazing studio's which put out some extremely high-quality, highly regarded games.

They still don't hold a candle to EA though, I'll never forgive them for what they did to Bullfrog and Westwood. lol

Closing down lionhead, creators of Fable and Black and White is a massive loss to the industry and a massively missed opportunity by Microsoft.

To call Lionhead an amzing studio is a bit of a stretch.  Also their best game Black and White was made under EA not MS.  So yeah EA gave up on them a lot earlier then MS did.

Black and White, whilst made while the company was under EA's thumb is irrelevent. - It was the people working at Lionhead that made that game what it was and pulled it off, not EA.
Fable 1 and 2 were also great games in their own respective rights, Fable 3 was decent, but could have been so much more, anyone who played it could easily have seen the potential it had.

Lionhead certainly had more hits than misses as far as I am concerned, I have sunk more hours into their games than most other franchises, hence why I can and will call them an Amazing studio which helped draw me and keep me in Microsoft's gaming ecosystems.

in general it feels like Microsoft completely lost its way lately

Wouldn't you if you entered a market for 3 generations, won none of them, lost all sorts of deals and brands along the way as well as most of the userbase you tried to create on both PC and consoles?, I'd probably have gone stark mental by now if I was still there or still running the company because so far over the years they just can't seem to keep winning at something, it's one win and 5 losses.

If I won 1 match on Heroes of the Storm and lost 5-10 times I'd quit playing the game for a while as it's not worth putting in even more effort for more to lose, I'd rather take my chances when I know I have the chance to win, I'd rather cut my losses if I'm going to lose, same with MS trying to cut off bits and pieces that aren't making them big money for a mega corp, that's usually what mega corps end up doing over time in the end anwyay (happened with Sony when they were losing in other markets and decided to shave off those that didn't bring in the big money or lost them cash).

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

I like how some here ignore that Sony does it As well.

I don't think people are ignoring that. It's just that it's been a long time since a studio of such magnitude closed down.

Lionhead wasn't anywhere as big as Gears or Halo for MS though, despite the spin off games Fable had, none of them were as big as Gears or Halo either. I think because it's MS and so far this gen they have been the major focus on negaivity that it seems almost natural to make a big deal out of this to spite a company brand someone else didn't like (we're already getting list wars of studios closed in here already, facts or not it;s listing one vs the other and creating a competitive argumental rift).

The only way this would have been a big deal if they actually made something decent recently.  Criterion Games and Team Bondi no longer being around is a bigger deal since their last/only games where actually good.

They really didn't have a choice to focus on games other than Fable. - Black and White showed that they had some amazing creativity in that studio, would have liked for them to have had more creative freedom to work on other projects.

EA and Peter Molyneux bailed out on Lionhead Studios a lot sooner then MS did.  If they would have stayed with EA they would have gotten disbanded a lot earlier.

You don't know that.
They were having financial troubles sure, but they could have also found investment elsewhere.

For all we know they might have made the next big AAA 50+ million selling franchise if they were allowed to deviate from Fable, it's not like their games weren't fun.

EA is pretty quick to disbanned studios if the game doesn't sell well enough 38 Studios is probably the prime example for that.  MS and EA isn't the only publisher that dropped Lionhead Studios though, Activision also dropped then since they made two The Movies titles for them which isn't that much of a surprise since Activison is also pretty quick to disband developers.

Well what he says is true, and mark my word there will be more. I hope Nintendo or Sony pick up some of these guys

They didn't have to make games as big as Gears or Halo (although Fable is definitely one of Micorsoft's most recognizable IPs) for them to play a pivotal role for the company. Going forward, sure, it remains to be seen if this absence will really be anything major. And just because some of us call it a big deal for them, doesn't mean we think it's the end of the brand. In fact, very people have said anything close to that.

Pivitol, sure but not major out out there known by everyone in the sdame regards that Halo and Gears are. Their abdcense with Fable 4 tells me that the shut down isn't the end of the world. The last great Fable game I played was Fable II and even then I enjoyed 3 for a bit but I can't really play that on PC these days so nothing of value was really lost to me in a major I cannot live my life kind of way.

Some people are using this news as a means to say it's the end of a brand or the end of all brands, bit odd to say no one will (implied).
