It's very important to note the alleged title of this game. "Beyond Good and Evil: The Prejudices of Philosophers."

Not Beyond Good and Evil 2: Subtitle. Again, with how different this game looks from the original, it may as well be a reboot, even if it does pick up from where the original left off. This is good, because marketing this title as it's own new thing that you don't need to play the original to enjoy, especially when it probably looks and plays very differently, gives it a chance to actually be a smash hit instead of another cult classic.

That being said, the last time I saw gameplay of it, it looked like an Assassin's Creed game, so I'm not personally excited to actually play it myself, but that will do wonders for how it will be excepted in the mainstream.

To be honest, if it's really a NX exclusive, it's smarter to not name it "Beyond Good & Evil 2" only because the first BGE wasn't on a Nintendo system, so the n-fanbase didn't play it. Well, if they port the first BGE on NX that would solve the problem, like they did with Bayonetta, but that may not be worth it this time.

But I still find that name pretty stupid.

Thats fine. Its not like many people played it anyway sadly enough. If the remastered version of this game sold badly on the 360 and PS3, then I think this rumor is even more likely.

It isn't as much of a stretch as you'd think. Look at Bayonetta. That game wasn't a financial failure but it was far from a smash hit. Sega didn't want to publish Bayonetta 2. Neither did anyone else. It was a sequel to a game that really didn't seem worthwhile for an investment until Nintendo stepped in. With Beyond Good & Evil, it was a financial failure that has since become legendary. So a sequel and a re-release of the original game could potentially build a lot of hype.
