It isn't as much of a stretch as you'd think. Look at Bayonetta. That game wasn't a financial failure but it was far from a smash hit. Sega didn't want to publish Bayonetta 2. Neither did anyone else. It was a sequel to a game that really didn't seem worthwhile for an investment until Nintendo stepped in. With Beyond Good & Evil, it was a financial failure that has since become legendary. So a sequel and a re-release of the original game could potentially build a lot of hype.
