"forwarding" is going to require new hardware at the end of the day that isn't going to happen with an old closed off system.

Uggh, my favorite thing about consoles was the assurance that my purchase practically guaranteed six or seven years where devs would try to push the console as hard as they could. This sounds more like the Ipad or Iphone practice, where apps continue to work on your older models, but aren't optimized particularly well. I don't want to continually upgrade my hardware in order for my games to run well.

Yeah... That will be a real communication and marketing mess. The mainstream/casual/family buyers might be lost and fail to understand clearly which version does what.

Clarity is best. You buy the current Playstation, the current Xbox, the current Nintendo. A lot of people would likely not bother to search and understand several versions of a same console... (who said "Steam boxes" ?)

Gfx look fine just have games on the platform. After 4 or 5yrs when 4K is possible on console or some new tech comes along then make the console. Upgrading console is silly and BS. Why not get a PC instead or steam box ?

sounds like a new XB model incoming with internal spec to upgrade whenever there is available just like a PC, but difference is that it still a console made for gaming...
