Presumable hardware specs is my best guess. But I agree that it technically is 9th gen

Sure, I agree with you. But 50m should be doable, even if they mess some things up. I mean, even the 3DS was able to pull 60m+ despite being overpriced/outdated/badly |
Yes it did do quite well, a pokemon at launch could do pretty well I guess. But don't forget that phones and tablets claimed quite a bit of marketshare in the mobile gaming aspect. But nonetheless with a good homeconsole behind it, I guess 50 million should be pretty doable.

If we use the term generation as a way to organize the successive hardware releases of companies, then the NX is a 9th gen console.
If we use the term generation as a way to talk about machines with similar specs, then the NX is a 8th gen console.
I'm more inclined to used the first one and say the NX is a 9th gen machine, but considering all the changes the console market is suffering, I think the term will go bust sooner than later.

It is a bit of a weird situation to launch a console mid gen of course. Since the PS4 and Xone are really picking up steam now till 2019. Due to the hardware gap it's getting more weird all together so it's probably good the therm will burst.

This thread alone shows that NX will be 8th generation...
Unless the NX has a gimmick that rivals the original Wii's Wii-Mote it will flop.
Nintendo is never getting back the hardcore crowd, nor will they get back all the casuals who bought the original Wii in droves. The only people who will care about the NX are the same people who bought the Wii U. However, since the Wii U is getting axed prematurely there will be a lot of bitter Nintendo fans who might not even buy an NX, at least not right away.
Best case scenario the NX does Wii U numbers, but more than likely it will sell even worse. I'm talking strictly about the NX home console, not NX handheld.
As I've stated before, I think NX is going to do the smart thing and integrate already existing peripherals into their fold. I think, gone are the times of first party dedicated peripherals.
For example, one of the main problems with wiiU, if not the single most deadly factor was the prohibitiveness of the tablet. Meanwhile, 80m people in America have a tablet, and like 200m+ own a smartphone. Had the WiiU used a smartphone or alternative tablet, they would have been so far ahead of the curve. Their tablet already added like 150$ onto the price of the console. Meanwhile, they could have simply done the Nintendo thing, and added a 50$ "thumbstick adaptor" phone/tablet casing which would have only cost them like 12$ to make. That is the Nintendo way. Not making a proprietary tablet controller.
Except, they will make a proprietary tablet controller...the portable NX. This will be the alternative to using your phone or tablet, but will be sold seperately as another system. In that way, you have two systems that act independently of each other, but also add value to each other.
It really is the perfect solution, and I hope Nintendo does it because it's so simple.

It's absolutely 9th gen no matter how you look, what we need to know is if it will be a handheld or home console.

So I guess the dreamcast is 5th gen, xbox 360 is 6th gen...
