maybe but would it be worth to develop an extra version for handhelds?

Handhelds and/or mobile. Considering how big that market is in Japan, it's nothing to ignore.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Your numbers answer that question for you. Chinatown Wars was a fantastic game on both DS and PSP and it sold like trash in Japan. The Stories games, from my understanding, were very quality and on PSP and they sold like trash in Japan. So no, the series wouldn't fare any better on handheld. If anything it seems to fare worse just like it does everywhere else.

I doubt Take Two or Rockstar mind. The only thing Japan would add to the fray would be a definitive "best selling game ever" label that it has already hit if we don't count bundled games like Wii Sports.

You should check out my YouTube channel, The Golden Bolt!  I review all types of video games, both classic and modern, and I also give short flyover reviews of the free games each month on PlayStation Plus to tell you if they're worth downloading.  After all, the games may be free, but your time is valuable!

Of Course, in Japan every game would sell better on handheld than one home console because handhelds are far more popular.

I wonder if a GTA game with the japanese culture, on a japanese city could work better in japan.
Put it on a handheld and also consoles, launch first on japan, and lets see what happens. i guess it could work very well

btw, id like to know a japanese city and know about it culture and mess with japanese cops...
xD

The Japaneese market is not big enough for this to pay off. A game like GTA sells more units than there are consoles that could play GTA in Japan. Risking alinating the rest of the world is not a gamble Rockstar/Take Two would take.

What? Chinatown Wars was the worst GTA ever imo...

2D GTAs has been a form of gameplay unfairly abandoned in my opinion. It's a shame the 3D GTAs have almost killed it, they could do a lot with it.

Highest-rated DS game ever, third-highest PSP game ever, contender for 2009 GoTY. I'd say you're in the minority there bud.

Which goes back to: If THAT game can't sell well on handheld in Japan, nothing is going to.

Not true, modern mobile devices can handle open world games we've seen on PS3 and 360.

They could also scale back to visuals to make them perform better on more mobile devices. Its the graphics that use up most of the resources, not the gameplay.

Anyhow, in regard to the OP. A GTA on Vita wouldn't be worthwhile. However, we'll eventually see ports of GTAIV and V on mobile devices.

By "handhelds" I meant dedicated portable gaming devices so that doesn't include smartphones ...

@Bold Maybe so but if the PC version of GTA V is anything to go by it's also a CPU hog ...

I think we'll see GTA IV and V soon enough on phones but by then GTA VI will be on consoles and we won't be seeing that on smartphones for some years ...

In the end what good does it do for mobile devices to be a few years behind the franchises we see on home platforms ?
