If it weren't for Sony this gen would have:

Always online DRM
You dont own the games you "buy"
You cant sell/loan the games you buy
Prices skyrocketing etc

Before, during, and after the Xbox One announcement MS was literally like "We cant discuss that right now/We'll back to you later" for any and all questions. It was painfully obvious that they saw the potential for a monopoly and wanted to be like Apple/Itunes.

Well Sony not releasing a console wouldn't have immediately made all of the developers disappear. So it'd probably be mostly the same. You'd just have to play Uncharted on PC or Xbox instead.
