I was happy with past Nintendo consoles, but the wii is a gimmick. Its not a real system, its something to pass time until you get a normal system like the 360/PS3. The wii-mote is the worst thing to happen to gaming since the virtual boy.

Why is the Wii a Gimmick? Because its graphics aren't as good as the 360/PS3's? I hope motion controls aren't your issue because the PS3 has them too.

When I think of Gimmick, I think of things that don't really succeed like oh you know, the Eye Toy, the PS-EYE, Six-Axis, Sweat Engines for Sports Games, Gameboy Advance Card Reader, N64DD, PS Pocket Station, Virtual Boy, Famicom Disc System, etc. etc. When I see Sony has already attempted Motion Controls with the Six-Axis, a potential motion sensing glove for the PS4 and Microsoft is developing their own dual motion controller, you can be pretty sure that the originator of the trend (The Wii) isn't so much a gimmick as it is a sign of the comming times. Last generation you could have called the Gamecube's Wavebird a Gimmick, but wireless controllers are now the standard. You could have called the Dreamcast's (even the Xbox's) online play a Gimmick, but today it has become the standard if not a necessity. You could have said the N64's Rumble was a gimmick, but before you knew it the PS had Dualshock. You could have called the N64's four controller ports a gimmick but by today its the bare minimum for any console.

What's the real Gimmick here? A console that tries to take gameplay further via a new means of interaction (the Wii) or a console that tries to force something as arbitrary to gaming as its company's new media format onto the consumer in a dubious gesture while boasting copy-cat slapped on motion controls and a successor to the questionable Eye-Toy? If you want a Gimmick try an overengineered console that is so hopelessly complicated and was so unprepared for in developer support that it was sold on the promise of what it potentially could do in years to come, not what it could do at the moment resulting in a slew of graphically inferior and buggy ports.

While Sony pushes the Ps3 as a trojan horse for Blu-Ray sacrificing and Microsoft pushes the 360 to cock block their competitor's expansion into other markets that could possibly be exploited through gaming... Nintendo is the only company still making a video game console solely for the video game market. Oh but that's right, they're the ones who are the gimmick, not the two others who are using gaming as a means to other ends.

Posted like a true Nintendo fan. Nintendo=good everything else=the devil, right? LMAO!

Assuming you even bothered to read anything I had to say I can gather from your painfully limited response that you realized your only option would be to shallowly attack my credibility rather than attempt to refuit any of the evidence or points I've presented.

The Wii is not video gaming's godsend and I'd be lying if I said it was in anyway my ultimate ideal, but its hardly the one who can be called a gimmick this generation.

Or should I have simply respond with: "Posted like a true Nintendo-hater. Nintendo=bad everything else=Win, right?  LMAO!"

Motion controls are a gimmick, and i hate them, they serve no use in gaming.  Sony was retarded to add them just like Nintendo.  And if motion controls are the future then why the hell is Nintendo still selling GC controllers right alongside wii games.

Rumble in games serves little to no use, i have only found one use for it and thats being shot at in a game, and i could careless if it leaves forever. Since i have had no rumble since i bought my PS3 and i do not miss it. Online play or wavebird controllers could never be called a gimmick, they improve on gaming as a whole, unlike motion controls, which infact inhibit gamers controls over their game.

Pressing a button gets the job done alot faster and alows quicker controls in fast paced games the waving your hand to do something, plus the game does not even do what you want it to all the time.

I don't think i need to respond to all your anti-Sony/MS crap.

Griffin, how the hell do motion controls inhibit control of a game when it adds a million and one (exaggeration, don't take seriously!) new possibilities in how to play a game? You've proven in your posts that your idea of innovation in gaming comes from the hardware (Graphics? Wireless?) and not the games themselves or the gaming input methods. Would you rather still be playing with an old NES pad with 2 face buttons and nothing else? Was that a gimmick as well?

Everything Onimusha12 said was correct, there's only one company that's actually constantly evolved throughout the generations of gaming and that IS Nintendo (well, not excluding Sega as well). Nintendo innovates, Sony (and it may seem MS as well) copies. Before you jump on your high horse there is only ONE exception to this and that is the introduction of Optical Media is the storage medium, but go back to your history books and remember that that WAS going to be a joint venture with Nintendo / Philips / Sony.

You can bet your ass the next generation of consoles will have the next step up in motion controls from Sony and MS, and it's because of what Nintendo have done THIS generation. Meanwhile what 'gimmick' will Nintendo be working on next? They've done (more) buttons, they've done analogue, they've done touch, they're doing motion right now, what next?

Face it - Wii = Not a fad / gimmick.

As for the topic, if the Wii did flop then I'd be seriously losing my (already slowly dropping) faith in gaming or the people that play games for letting such innovation die whilst Sony and MS shove more polygons and multimedia functions down their throats.

Gaming NEEDS Nintendo.

i would be very sad, Nintendo is the one who has taken risk this gen, and if the wii had been a flop, The next gen we would have seen the same again, more graphics, and the same way of playing games

i wouldn't have cared. i don't wish for any console to fail. i just don't want my console of choice to fail.

As long as the Wii still received Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn, SSBB, and a few other noteworthy games...  I wouldn't really care.

For me, a player that especially likes the turn based war simulations such as Advance Wars, I would want all three console makers to fail except for that one genre of game that I like. And the console that supported that genre to suceed, with all game developers only / primarily concentrating on that niche.

Of course, seeing it at a bit wider of a view point, I would be sadden if Nintendo disappeared. 3 console makers adds enough diversity to go for slightly different markets without overwhelming us with too much choice.

All of that is true. But only for you.
Online play is a gimmick.
But only for me, since I rarely use it, and like to just play as a single player.
I like rumble. It's sensory feedback. And when Sony dropped it, you could hear their fans rumble as well, and now it is back.

Motion control is ONE of the options inputs for future gaming. It doesn't (and shouldn't be and isn't) the only one. However, to bring in a lot more people to the gaming world, it helps. Now, don't worry. I doubt if you will see / come into contact with many of these new ones that use the Wii Remote to play with. But let them have their fun too.

After all, they don't make you drive an automatic SUV, which most now days are not sporty, nor very utility, and on some days on the freeway, I even wonder about vehicle.

@Username2324
"If the Wii had been a flop I would be much happier because like most cheap things it holds the technology world back for another generation, luckily, I suppose the Wii isn't as bad since it has Motion sensing.

I mean, if price wasn't a concern imagine how much farther along technology would be."

If price wasn't a concern, then even the PS3 would be a flop. Think of what a trillion dollar (or higher) console gaming machine could do compared to the what would be considered pathetic sub-$1000 consoles.

But price is a concern, so much so that if PS3 hadn't been able to get its price down, we probably would have been still talking about its very poor sales.

Cheap may be holding back new technology for the next generation console, but thanks to motion controls, there will be more gamers to play those machines.

Torturing the numbers.  Hear them scream.

I would be pretty indifferent actually.

Would still be somewhat interested in SSBB and MK, while other stuff doesn't really interest me at all.

wait, it's EXACTLY the same. :P

Strictly brand name? The brand name came because of the nostalgia. Well anyway it would suck but hey I survived the gamecube so the wii won't bother me so much. I'm too old to get carried away with consoles..
I wish them all the luck and hopefully we will get some good games out of this deal:)

No way man, Ninty has been in this business longer than anyone else. I like companies that stick with something and do everything they can to excel at it. Meanwhile I hate companies that use their brand name to lure sheep into buying everything they make. Sort of like Toshiba or Sony selling alkaline batteries. Does Sony know more about making batteries than Duracell or Energizer, does Sony make them better? No, they don't. Yet I have seen people buy Sony brand batteries over the other brands even when the Sony ones cost more.

Call me silly but that just pisses me off, Sony makes great personal electronics not batteries. I like companies that make one type and product and do it well (i.e. Nintendo). I buy Bose speakers, I wouldn't buy a candy bar made by Bose.
