Came in expecting John Lucas comeback; left disappointed.

Nintendo can sell more consoles even with inferior hardware (gameboy, DS, Wii). |
Is that why the Wii U is outselling the ps4 and the xbone? Oh wait ... thats not happening
The reality is the NX is now at 0 sold and the ps4 has sold 36 million and probably will be at 50 million when the NX launches, now thats a hell of a headstart the NX will have to overcome
I don't really think so, because technologies always have breakthroughs.. right now not much is being changed, but I'm sure in a few years, there will be another breakthrough so if Nintendo is always behind technology wise, it won't be enough just to catch up :/

[3DS] Winter Playtimes [Wii U]

I love a lot of 3rd party titles, but I think that Nintendo delivers on that front on a regular basis. When a Nintendo game is criticized, it's rarely for mechanics.
The new "Mario Tennis" was widely panned because it didn't evolve the franchise. Few would argue it's a poorly made game. The same cannot be said of a lot of 3rd party titles.

@Bold Then they should focus on getting good content too. Successful yearly franchises hardly has new mechanics to offer so there's clearly more value to be had in new content with new successors. Tons of MMOs and certain AAA IPs make money by selling it's content, not gameplay ...
Nintendo NEEDS to prove hat it has the better games by selling it's own platforms. They do just fine for handhelds but they have a lot to learn in the console space ...
I agree with some of the OP's points but I have a different prediction for how things might one day progress once graphics are no longer a thing.
It's a simple fact that Sony and Microsoft have put a lot of their eggs in the basket of "our system delivers the best possible graphics" whereas Nintendo hasn't invested any amount of their brand into delivering industry-leading graphics since the GCN days. It also makes sense that we are starting to approach a glass-ceiling for delivering better graphics as the improvements are becoming less and less noticeable with each generation. Sony and Microsoft have the most to lose from this glass-ceiling as this will eventually require them to reinvent their current model, whereas Nintendo will likely be unaffected by this particular change.
Now that's not to say that people are just going to drop Sony and Microsoft and all run back to Nintendo. I actually think that it is more likely that the graphical-ceiling will be one contributor to a much bigger problem, that is: increased gamer apathy where more people gradually move to the casual-friendly, low-commitment games that they can play on their smartphones or similar devices. The console wars will be no more and harcore gaming will become more and more niche. Nintendo actually has their own stake in this problem because while they are not fighting the graphics wars anymore they are still very much about providing a hardcore gaming experience and the type of low-commitment gaming that we see on smartphones is just as much a threat to Nintendo as to Sony and Microsoft.
No, Nintendo can't hope to get back in the game by waiting for Sony and Microsoft to hypothetically self-destruct. What they can do is make the NX a successful console and win back market-share the old fashion way in the short-term: this well help them to be in a much better position when the bigger challenges come down the road.
I agree with some things, but not the conclusion. I think it will be a time when graphical power won't be a major selling point, and the leaps each generation are getting shorter.
No, just no.
Anyone who thinks graphics define a generation of gaming is fooling themselves. Suddenly the research into virtual reality means nothing because "the graphics should be better." From vastly improved AI to significantly better procedurally generated areas, games begin having more depth and realism without the need for 4k 120 fps. Social integration is significantly improved and digital gaming is increasing significantly. The whole industry is growing regardless of whether you can "see" these changes.
Heres Nintendo's problem. They are a generation behind on literally everything. Graphics, computing power, online multiplayer, social integration, reward/accomplishment system, etc. Nintendo is gambling on "big" and "unique" ideas without solidifying their core areas. Because of this, they are losing relevance within the industry. Everyone here seems to think they can recover it if they can make a "big" hit like the wii, but they can't. It's almost been a decade since the wii. Social media has expanded and the gaming industry has learned how to make reliable profits. Not having third party alone is what makes it impossible for Nintendo to make this "magical" comeback

Nintendo is not Microsoft or Sony... It don't walk at the same time... But i think NX will given boost in lot of things You speak about...
