The new "Mario Tennis" was widely panned because it didn't evolve the franchise. Few would argue it's a poorly made game. The same cannot be said of a lot of 3rd party titles. 

@Bold Then they should focus on getting good content too. Successful yearly franchises hardly has new mechanics to offer so there's clearly more value to be had in new content with new successors. Tons of MMOs and certain AAA IPs make money by selling it's content, not gameplay ... 

Nintendo NEEDS to prove hat it has the better games by selling it's own platforms. They do just fine for handhelds but they have a lot to learn in the console space ...
