It is Nintendo that must prove that it can offer higher quality games than the 3rd parties out there 

I love a lot of 3rd party titles, but I think that Nintendo delivers on that front on a regular basis. When a Nintendo game is criticized, it's rarely for mechanics.

The new "Mario Tennis" was widely panned because it didn't evolve the franchise. Few would argue it's a poorly made game. The same cannot be said of a lot of 3rd party titles.
