However, what we do know is that EA's exclusive deal (with Madden at least) only applies to third parties... First parties ARE allowed to make licensed NFL games.  Microsoft and Sony don't do this because they are worried about their relationship with EA.

So, if EA kept the licenses on their new console, Microsoft and Sony would start working on their NFL/Fifa/whatever  games pretty much immediately.  The other games wouldn't be as popular, but many gamers would prefer this to buying a system just for Madden.

EA would keep the hardcore madden fans, and sell a few million units.  Then, when the contracts end, every license would leave, and EA would be on the brink of bankruptcy.

alright, didnt knew about this madden licensing deal.

But sony and microsoft probl wont have the expierence to make as good games fast.

I wont say the console would be doomed if it would get third party support, EAs real first party IPs (Mirrors Edge, mass Effect, Dragon Age, Battlefield) are for sure on a same or even better level then sonys/microsofts first party ips (at least in terms of popularity). Their only problem would be the strong brand exspecieally sony has with the playstation.

When EA refused to make Madden games for the Dreamcast, Sega responded by creating the NFL 2K series.  Despite Sega's lack of experience, the games were considered better, and became such a threat to EA, that they created the exclusive deal they have now to crush competition.

Console would be doomed.  More importantly though, even if the console was successful it is still highly unlikely it would make up for the revenue lost by not selling Madden on multiple platforms.

It's actually the opposite, Sega started making the 2K series and EA threatened to stop supporting them if they didn't abandon the series. Sega declined and EA dropped support.

I would predict it would flop.

And it would flop harder than I actually predicted.

If they went exclusive many, if not all, of their sports licenses would probably get cancelled. The same goes for Star Wars and any other licensed property they work with.

So no, I don't think their console would sell all that well. Maybe better than the Wii U because they'd get more third party games, but not better than PS4 and probably the XBO.

So what you're saying is that an EA console would kill Madden and allow NFL2k to rise again? HOW DO I HELP MAKE THIS HAPPEN?!?!?!

About as successfull as Origin....

origin probl have 100mio+ users.

lst official numbers i could fin was 50mio from 2013 and heavily growing.

Origin doesn't have to sell expensive hardware though. There's no way an EA console would sell a 10th of that lol

I'm not sure if 3rd parties would be lining up to support an EA console. They would probably enjoy not having to compete with one of the biggest 3rd party publishers out there.

No.

Their exclusive rights for sports licenses prohibit them from developing exclusively for one platform. Likewise, Disney wouldn't have given them the Star Wars license with the conditions they have now.

Additionally, EA would have to convince other big publishers to develop for their console and compete with Sony and Microsoft in bidding wars for marketing rights of third party titles.

I was going to say yes until I read this post.  They'd be fucked actually.  And 2k would develop a football game across ps4/X1/pc and EA would be left in financial ruin once the venture capitulates.

It would sell worse than the WiiU and the Vita which would be a all time new record.

I doubt that. Games like fifa are already more popular then nintendos games (mario kart, smash, super mario). They have an extreme big range in the casual market.

you're delusional if you think EA could actually push consoles with just their sports titles. won't work

its unlikely EA even has the assets or ability to attempt that sort of thing anyway

maybe something like Activision could possibly do it, you have to have GIANT franchises for it to work, i.e. Call of Duty or something

a lot of people seem unaware that Nintendo is by far the largest company in terms of home console SOFTWARE sales. no one else comes close. EA doesn't come close in total software sales in total

an EA console would fail because they would get no support from their other third party software competitors and they lack a lot of diversity in their library.

bear in mind that EA's current success is BASED from being a third party. if you're bringing up the possibility that EA would create their own console then all of their sales on other consoles would disappear

its like a backwards conundrum. EA works as a third party developer. they don't have the infrastructure or business model to support what you're suggesting

Assuming EA could still make a Madden and FIFA game, even if they'd no longer have exclusive rights, then they'd probably do pretty well with a home console. The ecosystem of those games should not be underestimated. They're the primary draw to videogames for millions of people.

As for the rest of the line-up, EA has a lot of titles to offer, though they'd have to bring more content to market.

Madden and Fifa are tiny compared to the likes of Call of Duty

an EA system would fail. they work as a third party company, their revenue would be GONE if they stopped selling software on other consoles. again, sports is all they really have to offer

No, it makes no sense for ANY company to enter the traditional console hardware market at this point.

Why would buy a console just for Fifa and other EA Sports if you can buy a PS4/X1 with the same games and more?
