I'm happy with my "New" 3DS XL, I can't care less about replacing it. I wish they'd just support it for a very long time and do better at adding more VC titles to the 3DS E-Shop..

Mobile phones are starting to get enough "decent" games, that you can actually start takeing that market seriously.
And there are alot of mobile phones out there.
I think nintendo & sony, just need to make a hybrid handheld / mobile phone.
A phone with physical buttons to play with, that can also take cartridge games.
It needs to be cheap (ment for younger audience).
Parents would buy a Nintendo phone, if nintendo made sure it was kid safe, and cheap & durable (glass doesnt break ect).
They could market that, and get parents on board.
I have never owned a Nintendo console (other than original gameboy). But if Nintendo does NX right, I might buy both the handheld and home console. I am looking for a handheld that can play remasters/port of the nintendo games. And a console that can rival Ps4 in terms of graphical and gameplay capabilities. Hope nintendo doesn't disapoint me, while they games are good never liked their hardware design since the snes.
N64-no cd
gamecube-small cd, ugly console
wii-weak, bad controller
wii-U -- weak, bad controller
ds- dont like double screen and lack of analog
3ds- same as ds
For me its that NX Handheld will destroy and own the market. They have no competition and will sell millions regardless. But the console is the wildcard, and faces stiff competition. NX console pretty much dictates Nintendos future in the console market. So it will draw lots of attention, including mine.

He's right though. Nintendo's decision making over the last five years has been so utterly terrible that your average forum going gamer probably could have done a better job. For one thing, we're not as completely out of touch with today's gaming market as Nintendo seems to be. |
Pretty much this
Nintendo seems to enjoy living in the past and ignoring new tech, It's kinda sad. I've always supported them until this giant mess called Wii U, so I moved on to my first PlayStation ever and I couldn't be happier

So much talk about the NX "console" and the Wii U (a system with a paltry 12 million users) ... why no talk about the 3DS successor? The 3DS is past it's "5 year age" in a matter of weeks (launched in Japan in Feb 2011) and Nintendo has pretty much exhausted every possible franchise for it. 3DS successor is far more vital to Nintendo than NX (if it's a discreet console) or Wii U, that's just a fact. If the 3DS successor continues to suffer declining marketshare due to kids being raised on tablets/phones these days, then Nintendo's hardware future is pretty much kaput, doesn't matter how fancy-schmancy a console NX is or how long Nintendo decides to support the Wii U. Even if NX is a unified platform, realisitically the portable model is going to have to carry like 80% of the load most likely given Nintendo's crap track record with home consoles. I just find it funny that the portable is always swept aside like "oh yeah, Nintendo maybe will throw out a handheld this year" like they can just fart one out as a side thought. |
Part of it is that the portable is kind in Japan and winning their home turf is extremely important and vital to Nintendo. Despite everything, the 3DS still sells well in Japan they have the dominate gaming hardware outside of PC/mobile there. The lack of third party support is less critical in Japan as while there are some developers that steer clear of the device in favor of Vita/PS3/PS4 multi platform games (which may get most of their sales from digital given how they still get so many high profile releases despite not showing up much on sales charts for long), those that sell the best usually are on the system including the upcoming Dragon Quest entry which most likely will outsell the PS4 version if past history of multiplatform games in Japan are anything to go by.
Nintendo doesn't want to derail that, while the 3DS may just be a portable outside of Japan, within its boundaries it is still pretty much King. You don't want to cut the legs off the king to make way for a successor until it is close to complete. Also the fact is that a new 3DS successor means the industry costs are going to increase, Nintendo has walked a fine line of making their systems not be powerhouses to keep costs in check since as we have seen over the years, the higher development costs are the worst it is for the middle to lower level developer or publisher. Indies and support for them aren't as strong in Japan as the rest of the world yet, besides visual novels and some H games, so Nintendo being as cost conscious as they have always been is probably carefully trying to find something of economical level
Well the 3DS successo as a stand alone device is:
1. Almost guaranteed to perform worse then the 3DS.
2. Be rather traditional in design (the home console has more possibilities)
3. People care about home consoles more then they do handhelds.
Look at the poor support the 3DS has in its 5th year (outside of Japan). The dedicated gaming market is dying and only a few core devs are keeping it relevant in the west (Nintendo, Square Enix, Capcom etc).

Third parties wouldn't have rushed to make games for Nintendo's console because their games on previous Nintendo consoles didn't meet their unrealistic sales expectations. As a result, a good amount of games would have never been ported to begin with ("We do not believe that there is an audience for our games."), and the ones that got ported would be unoptimized because why would third parties bother. Additionally, the processing power of Nintendo's console would have gone unharnessed because third parties certainly wouldn't push the envelope for a single console manufacturer when said manufacturer is Nintendo. Heck, third parties' initial PS4 and X1 ports didn't look next gen either. The effects on consumer perception would have consisted of "meh, these games are not worth buying at full price" if people owned the Nintendo console, and "I'll definitely wait to see what Sony and Microsoft will have in store" if they didn't buy the Nintendo console right away. The death spiral begins to show its ugly face in 2013, Nintendo drops the price to $300, but it doesn't help anymore because it has becoming increasingly more obvious that the system will miss out on tons of games. Ultimately, you arrive at pretty much exactly the same result as Nintendo's actual eighth gen console. |
Exactly this.
The are issues like demographic who wouldn't rush out to buy these third party games just because the mainstream says they're good, third parties wouldn't have put much effort or even bothered and on top of that the are business approaches specific to the platform holder, Sony and MS can sell at a much bigger loss then what Nintendo can so the approach people keep harping on about in making a console like the PS4 is a dead end like you mentioned as by default the's no way to keep up, essentially the forum goers answer to the problem is copy the competition and that strategy leaves them at a huge disadvantage.
It's almost as if they forget that's what the GC did, people use the mini discs as an excuse when in actual fact 90% of the games would have fit on them with no issue.

Yeah it's ugly out there. Even in Japan, and I travelled pretty much exclusively on the subway for 1-2 hours every day for a good 10 days in Tokyo ... it's actually kinda eerie, what you'll see if the subway is very quiet, but you look to your left and it's like a row of 50 people just staring down at their phone. Look to your right and it's the same thing, lol. |
Bit off topic, but interesting you say this, because the ugly side of the impact of smartphones (along with social media) goes far beyond just dedicated gaming devices.I swear it´s like so many people, especially the new generation, are slowly forgetting how to even have a decent, face to face interaction with another human being, with a good part of the communication being through Facebook, etc..and so many people spend so much time just staring down at their phones.
I see it all the time, every day...in restaurants, tables with 10 people and half of them are just hypnotized by their phones, at family/friends gatherings, same thing, and so on.
That's because the NX itself is also their next handheld.
